10 years and 95,000 miles have left the leather rim of my Viano's steering wheel polished smooth and shiny. I would like to restore it to something like its original texture so it is less slippery.

What would be a good way of achieving this?

Hi, For my old 300TDI bought a nice leather steering wheel cover, came with needle and thread and in just over an hour of delicate stitching I had a great new steering wheel. It looked good and felt good also. Even better was that it cost less then a fiver off of Ebay Regards

Have a search through the forum at royal steering wheels... Local to you as well I think?

Try a damp cloth from a bucket with fairy liquid and water.
Don't let the wheel get wet enough for the water to be absorbed.
Do it two or three times and see how it goes.

An auto-trim specialist told me they use this method:
Use neat detergent on a cloth. then use plenty of wet cloths to remove all traces of the cleaner. Let it dry and apply some gliptone.
Removes all the built up grease and is probably the cheapest method.
Ask a local trim specialist if they will sell you a small amount of what they use.

Ted beat me to it :)

This lovely person should be able to get the correct leather for your wheel, then you may wish to have it re-trimmed.

I finally found the correct leather for the 124 wood/leather wheel care of her [and all passenger car MB leather wheels from [1993 to approx. July 1997]; As always treat with respect and she will move heaven and earth for you to find the correct proper stuff...

I agree with Lyserman on the Gliptone after it has been cleaned too as that is what I use to condition my leather.
Just a can be bit of a faff getting it.
