Car
CLS 320cdi
well after owning the car approximately 23 hrs I got in it this afternoon to be greeted by the engine management light glowing merrily at me!!!!
Took it to a local specialist who plugged it in to his Star tester
summary
intake air temperature sensor
intake air temperature sensor
Right hot film mass air flow sensor (the air mass is too small)
Right hot film mass air flow sensor (short circuit or open circuit)
Left hot film mass air flow sensor (the air mass is too small)
Left hot film mass air flow sensor (short circuit or open circuit)
Mass airflow sensor. The mass air flow sensor is faulty
Mass airflow sensor. Sensor right. The air mass is too small
Mass air flow sensor. Sensor left. The air mass is too small
Glow plug cyclinder 4 open circuit
N14/3 at least one of the glow plugs is not actuated
Communication fault between CDI control unit
Test signal line (circuit 61) Signal line is interrupted
Heating check component. Short circuit to ground
Glow plug cylinder 2 open circuit.

Specialist seems to think it the air mass flow sensors at fault (......no sh*t sherlock!), parts alone come to £318.64 plus labour!

To say Im not over the moon is an understatement, BUT, got 1 months warranty, so at least it'll get fixed at their expense! but I've had better starts to car ownership

Better than that light starting to glow on 32 days of ownership.

Is it a brand new car ?

Assume he reset the codes, has the light come back on yet?

My cars throw up the odd light now and then, particularly after not being used for a bit, usually something unimportant like brakes and after locking the car for a few minutes and restarting all seems OK.

Is it running poorly?

no, we decided against resetting it it purely as the car will be going back to where it came from to get sorted, so thought it better that they see the light on and can read the codes is they feel like it.

Seems to be running OK, still pulls like a scalded cat on the kickdown

could be a number of faults or just one, seems alot of faults there. The best way forward in diagnosis would be to erase/clear the fault codes and wait for the light to come back on then this should give a better clue as what has gone wrong.

...Car sales owners fix what needs fixing ............. when it needs fixing ................... ie: when its sold !!!

The one month warranty is irrelevant as you have a 6 month Statutory Warranty as provided by the Sale of Goods Act if you bought from a dealer. Go see your local C.A.B. asap.
Good luck.

Regards

John

Just done some reading up about that, VERY interesting!
Thanks for putting me onto that John, I was completely unaware of that piece of law

A consumable parts fail eventually, you're just unlucky. I expect the dealer you purchased from will simply replace the MAF no issue, its a 10 minute job on your car.

I'd also expect the 1 month warranty will be unlikely to cover anything since after only 24h ownership they'll say they must all have been pre-existing faults.

Short-term dealer warranties are only of use if you've run out of Andrex.

to be fair its booked in next week to have 2 new mass air sensors fitted, which obviously includes the pipework they're attached to. New gaskets and a couple of other things the indie has advised. Total parts: £318.46 plus labour all being paid for by the dealer I bought it from in Sheffield. I can honestly say they couldnt have been more helpful

well it just gets better!
over last weekend before she went into the independant she developed the glow plug light staying on for a couple of minutes after start, then on 2 occassions she carried on running for 5-10 seconds even though I had the key out of the ignition!!!
The independant picked her up on Monday to fix the MAF issues, I'd left him a note with the other symptoms too.
Just got off the phone to him this morning as I've been in Aberdeen on a course.
He swapped the MAF over (he did comment that one of the sensor housings was mullered and cracked), cleared the codes and took her for a good run.....all good!
Got back to the garage, left her running for a moment, turned her off and she over ran again! and chucked all the same fault codes as before, with the addition of failure to communicate with ECU or something along those lines!!!!!
He also says she needs a new glow plug relay.
He was away to check if the fuel solenoid is intergral to the fuel pump, or a seprate unit on my model as he wonders if this could be sticking causing the over run.
Feeling really dejected at the moment to be honest, wanted one of these for at least 2 years and its proving to be a bloody nightmare after just over a week.

The problem will be the glow plug relay. This will have popped the 15 amp fuse in the front sam leading to all the other issues.

MAF's never go wrong on this model. the only reason they get changed it due to mis diagnosis or that pipework breaks up...

Would be advisable to change all the glow plugs whilst its there.

Im not sure on the over run issue but if the fuse is still popped then several engine sensors wont be working and car will be in limp.
Im sure it will be related.

The other issue they need to check for is the intake flaps motor as this also causes similar faults to occur and the same fuse to pop.

thanks for your reply.
I will add that at no point did the car go into limp mode, even with the EML illuminated, it drove fine (pulled just as well as it had for the 23 trouble free hours I'd owned it)

When I bought my ML 320 CDI last year within 24 hrs of ownership the glow plug relay took a while to go out after starting turned out to be the relay which was changed and all was fine but never had an issue with any other lights other than the glowplug one and didnt have any overrun.... Fastforward 4 months and after replacing one of the trans oil feed pipes that was leaking my diff has gone kaput nice quote of £3500 to supply and fit a new diff.. Im going back to Audi ownership I think not the best first impressions of Merc if I am honest..

Out of interest which dealer did you buy it from in Sheffield as mine came from Sheffield too!!!

the car specialists

on a side note, just had a phone call from them, they've spoken to the independant and given him authorisation to send the ECU away!
