An interesting "encounter" today.

A 58 plate 3 series, badged as a 320d, looking completely standard.

It could have been anything, however, it only had a single exhaust pipe, oval in shape.

Smoke each time it was gunned (DPF delete perhaps?).

3 people aboard - I was alone.

The only thing that made it look a bit different was a set of larger alloys.

A very very nice car in blue.

Now, here's the thing - it was quick, and I mean quick, each time he gunned it through the city streets.

I ended up behind it at a set of lights, and as they changed, he had the legs on me, despite my best efforts and him being 3 up.

Looking standard, I checked 320d outputs and he's nearly 100bhp down on me.

As I turned off he flashed his hazards, so clearly he's a bit of a petrol (diesel) head.

Any 3 series owner ideas?

ps - the "shouldn't be speeding through the city streets (I wasn't) will be ignored.

More than likely had a manual gearbox which will muller an automatic. Add to that the black smoke may mean it has had a remap and I doubt there'd be too much between you.

I was knacked by a 130 bhp Golf TDi when I was in my 177bhp E270 once.

Most depressing it was too.

Was the 335d available in 2008 , and the owner has a sense of humour ( hence the 320d badge ) .....

A mapped 335d is proper fast

It was a manual - I forgot to add that.

John

You travel in style and comfort. Speed is not the first priority as you have a Mercedes. Your car is fast enough.

Bet your MPG was better ....

Yes, mapped 335d will run easily up to 420/440BHP.

You can change Tailpipes -

I did on my 330D

I suspect this - I've been in 320d's before but not like this one.

Don't forget, I'm running 272bhp (claimed) so even mapping a 185bhp 2.0L shouldn't have had me struggling.

I appreciate a 3 is significantly lighter than mine, but he was 3 up.

335d has 2 single exhausts , 1 on each side

Did you manage to remember the plate, easy enough to check if 320 or 330.

335d has a pipe each side, I doubt a 335d owner would make it look like a 320d?

quick google..

The 184bhp can be tuned to 226bhp fairly easily.

So pretty nippy in a 3 series type car? power / weight

D3 Alpina perhaps?

350 max and they are dam dam quick. Brother in law had one and I could not shake it off with the e92 M3

Why assume it was an Oil Burner ??

Maybe but u can usually spot an Alpina unless it a serious Q Car Project

If you know what to look for, yes.

Its like compering B3 to M3, very much the same but so different.

Agreed
