(Actually I was just kidding about taping it. but I wanted you to feel bad till you read this bit:devil: )

well he had his chances when he took over from senna in arguably the best car on the grid and then when he was in mclaren and he blew them both. This is the time for the young guns

While I am chuffed to bits for Hamilton and cannot knock any of his superlative F1 debut season. I cannot help but feel slightly concerned for the future.

We have only just had a period of almost total domination of F1 by one driver, a period which was only recently ended by Alonso. I had been looking forward to a few years of F1 where there would be less of a status quo and a more open, competitive championship.

Then this boy-genius shows up and seems to show every intention of re-writing the record books.

I wish Lewis the best of luck and I hope he wins the title on his debut season (he really seems to be getting to Alonso already), but I also hope that the other drivers can get to grips with him and that the other constructors catch up to Ferrari and McLaren because F1 does not need another giant like Schumacher (or even greater than Schumacher). He may be British, but if Lewis begins to dominate F1 like it seems he will do, it will be a big turn off for many fans world wide.

For all those who say F1 is boring i hope you saw that spectacle. bring on indianapolis
I think we ought to take a deep breath........ Respect the drive by Hamilton but then look at the actual race. In a different thread and before the commencement of this race I said:

me said:
Could it be that the modern F1 driver is a spoilt prima donna that lacks the skills of a previous generation of driver and to compensate, tracks have to be modified?

Hamilton apart the standard of driving spoke for itself. I stand by all that has been said about modern Formula 1 and the four things that will stick in my mind regarding this week-end were:

1. Mrs Dennis hovering by Lewis Hamilton whenever he appeared in public. (Mrs Dennis is the wife of the boss of McLaren)

2. The second in charge of McLaren all but admitting that Hamilton failed to obey team orders at last week's Monaco Grand Prix.

3. The faultless drive by Lewis Hamilton

4. Kovalainen qualified NINETEENTH and finished FOURTH Surely that drive might also be considered worthy of mention?

I think McLaren might have a problem that is perhaps starting to become very public.

How do you placate a World Champion, but also feed the public interest in your number two driver that is out performing your team leader? Listening to the post qualifying press conference Hamilton was adding fuel to the fire and the first lap disaster was in my opinion a fore gone conclusion. Hamilton has 'got' to Alonso and we saw who came out on top of this week's mind game. Having said that, when Hamilton annoyed Massa, the Ferrari driver went out and won the next Grand Prix? What will happen at the US Grand Prix?

Yes I'm going to be watching the next Grand Prix, but no way do I think this modern Formula 1 compares to what we once had?

the only things sticking in my mind is the wall of champions and the BMW performing barrel rolls. Thank goodness no one perished

Probably. Except that his fellow rookie has finished in the points in each GP this year and one his 6th race. Total eclipse.

ISTR that Hamilton has stated that he rates Kovalainen.

That is the most important point - when all around were loosing it, great stuff.

OK - I will go out on a limb here and shoot me down if you wish.

Whilst I take my hat off to Hamilton and do indeed offer him every success for the future I have to wonder about F1 these days. They say the rules have changed to make it far more competitive and not just allowing the teams with mega bucks to romp away again but is it really true. If you put Hamilton in a Stryker would he have finished the first 5 races as he has.. Same driver, same talent and same ambition..?

Would most F1 drivers in a McLaren finish similar to Hamilton has..?

I guess this is where the split between sport for big money prizes and sport for spectators enjoyment comes in.

Is it not a show of how good the McLaren cars are - Really. You only get strykers and Red Bulls in the points when the top teams have failed or crashed. I guess that's sport but if reliability was always good no other drivers would stand a chance apart from the odd mistake.

I know F1 is a competitive sport and a team game with constructors points as well as driver points but is it ever going to be an actual race of 22 drivers..? My money is on a race of about 6 drivers in 3 different teams.

Would it be great viewing to put all drivers in the same car and let them battle it out on driver merit alone.

Rant over and I do enjoy watching but think it could be far more enjoyable if they limit the amount of money spent by each team in stead of psuedo rules to make it look transparent but are a far away from what they wanted.

Like I keep saying. Put an average driver in a top car and he will finish in the top three. Hamilton is better than average, BUT I GAURANTEE he would NOT have done won this race in the Renault. We can all be blinded by this one person, but as a fan of Formula 1, I recognise this acheivement, and also Sato's drive :D :D Hamilton has earned his seat a McLaren but his car is currently the best on the grid. Hamilton drove a race that was expected, Alonso let himself down, and more important he let the team down. A lack lustre drive by a driver that beat the best of last years drivers.

Oh and what ex World Formula 1 Champion had a helmet similar to Hamilton's?

Hi John

Our posts must have crossed..!!

ps. The late, great Senna I believe..?
:) :) Totally agree with all your points and we have discussed them before. Unfortunately the public are very easily influenced by media hype.

I hope Hamilton develops the same skills as what his idol achieved.

I watched Schumacher thrash the field at Silverstone a few years ago. Sporting greats are seen as dull or a switch off. But down the line, people look back on their careers and admire their success. At the time, a bit monotonous perhaps. But I witnessed one of the great sporting achievers of all time.
