LHD W163 V8 (or even G-Wagen)

Hi all,

I had posted a similar advert about 2 years ago and failed to find what I wanted so the project went off the boil. Well, it's back on.

In short, I am looking for a LHD petrol V8 powered W163 (I like the idea of an ML500 or ML55, but not essential) or G-Wagen which is cosmetically challenged (will consider pretty examples, but budget is limited), which is ideally in sound (or at least reasonable) mehcanical condition.

Price commensurate with condition. If it has an MOT and can drive home then great. If not, then distance will be important (I live in Surrey).

What's out there folks?

Nearly all of my LHD cars over the past 20 years have been bought in the UK. I Keep an eye on the UK LHD market but it has changed.

With used car prices on mainland Europe being significantly higher than in the UK, a lot of dealers have now set themselves up as LHD "specialists" asking silly money. Add to that the number of cars from Eastern Europeans with dubious history now on ebay and it's become increasingly difficult to buy a decent LHD car for reasonable money.

I doubt your'll get many suggestions from forum members so probably Ebay, Autotrader and Pistonheads are your best bet. You can filter your searches by using keyword LHD.

Thanks for the feedback on your personal experiences I appreciate it. I am already keeping an eye on those other avenues as well. I guess I was hoping that as I'm ok with a project vehicle of poor cosmetic condition, I was hoping that maybe a forum member had one lurking on the "back lot" somewhere.

An alternate question (probably to be posted elsewhere), would be to understand what is involved in switching a RHD chassis to LHD? This hints at the project and the reason I specifically want a W163. I want to use the chassis and mechanicals, not the body.

Reminds me about a 2006 LHD ML63 that (I think) has been unsold for close on two years (it's now Dec 2018). I'm sure I recall it started out ridiculously priced (guessing say £22k for a 147,000m (and in blue!) Every other ML63 for sale at that time (including mine) was £14-17k or so. He's dropped price to £15495 but still unsold. Just wondering why LHD 4x4s in UK are so difficult to shift
