2015 Mercedes C Class Estate Premium Plus
I'm meant to be picking up a 2015 Mercedes c class tomorrow but the reg still isn't on the dvla system.

The place I'm meant to buy the car from says the car had a personalised reg which the owner took when selling the car to them and that this new plate will be the one for the car.

How am I meant to pay for the tax if the reg isn't even found on the dvla website. I'm confused and not sure if I'm being stupid or if this raises red bells.

Any advice? Was really looking forward to picking up the car tomorrow.

Not sure... if the dealer is willing to divulge the personal plate, you could pay the VED this way, but I suspect they may cite 'privacy laws'.

That said... they must have shown you a copy of the old V5C? Or did it the V5C already show the original DVLA-issued plate?

I did see the old reg. I didn't know I can tax the car on that one in the mean time. Suppose it allows new owners for this Mercedes then while dvla deals with swapping over reg info on their side.

If you do manage to pay the tax using the old reg, then the VED will swap-over to the new reg automatically when the DVLA finally process the plate change. As will the MOT.

Muchly appreciated 👌😊 thanks for the quick help.

But be careful with insurance... you want to make sure that the personal plate was indeed taken-off the car by the DVLA. I.e. that the dealer isn't 'sitting' on the application (normally it would be the previous owner that would have removed the plate, but some owners leave it to the dealer to sort-out).

If you end-up insuring the car using the old reg, make sure you notify the insurer of a plate change as soon as you get the V5C.

DVLA systems can be a few days behind for reg changes

I was going to suggest this but don't know if it will cause any issues if the plate is going on another car?

It won't. I have changed plates on my cars (as many here did), the VED stays with the car, not with the plate.

Also, from memory the VED payment process requires the ref number from the V5C, so it will definitely be pinned to the right car.

That said, the risk is of the plate currently being in 'limbo'.... in which case he might not be able to proceed with VED payment on neither the old not the new reg until the reg transfer is fully processed by the DVLA.

But as long as the DVLA systems accept the V5C ref (with either plate), he should be fine.

Now that I have woken up properly and my brain in engaging forward gears rather than reverse, I remember doing a similar thing to my wife's car. I had the VED monthly on the original plate. A year later I put a new plate on the car and they automatically changed the details to show the new plate. D'oh!

You won't be able to tax the new car until the V5 comes back as you need the reference number from the document

there is a risk that if the reg change is in limbo that the wrong car is taxed! I would wait until the dealer has the new v5 and get them to tax it.

... Unless the old plate and the ref from the old V5C still work?

Is it normal practice for a dealer to sell a car without the correct documentation?

Be blowed if I would part with my hard-earned shekels without seeing the correct documentation and proof that there are no outstanding debts on the vehicle.

I guess this is an honest dealer trying to do the best thing but just remember, we can never own a car that has been stolen and if there is an outstanding hire-purchase agreement, then we are still in very deep do doo's

No doubt there is just a hic-cup with your vehicle and everything is kosher
