E 500 Coupe.
As the header. One would think that the O on the light switch was off. No. It acts just the same is the 'A' auto. When dark or entering the garage the lights come on.
Not noticed before as it's not often I go out during the hours of darkness...In the car that is.
No real problem but surely off should mean of. Handbook is not much help.

Car is 2010 E500 coupe.

Are you sure it’s not the DRLs which you don’t notice are on until it’s dark/in garage?

Hi, thank you. The DRLs are on whenever the car is started/In motion.
It's definitely the headlights, the green headlights on indicator illuminates.
The windscreen is clean.

I’m baffled then, doesn’t make any sense! :D

Probably why the newer cars got rid of the 0.

The default position is auto on newer cars.

I think you can set headlights on permanently (with ign on) from one of the menus.

Hi Ted. Thank you.
Have been through the menu. The trouble is they only come on when dark. If you park up when dark with the engine on, the headlights are on. This can be annoying to other drivers.
The photograph shows the lights are on with the switch at off. Very strange.

If it's the headlights that come on, then there's something wrong. If it's dipped lights, then you have intelligent lights . . .

On mine, the "0" doesn't mean OFF, but more "Default setting" i.e. Intelligent lights. The other positions are for precise situations ( parking lights, manual control or Auto Dimming "A").

MB changed the way the lighting switch worked on some models from, I think, 2010?

The ability for the driver to select "On" from the lighting switch was removed, you can have standard Automatic dipped beam illumination or choose to rotate the switch to turn them on when you wish but you cannot have a manual selection only option.

I used to turn the switch to side/parking lights, whenever I wanted to keep the engine running, whilst parked at night, on the X204 (GLK350 4Matic 2013).
To be honest, I though it was an American thing - my other cars were / are a bit older.

That kicks in, when the ignition is off, and usually actuates fogs and sidelights, at least on mine.

Ah so not the main lights? I always wondered, have never used it. On my old one the just sidelights stay on for about 60 seconds after locking/unlocking

... actually my new one does that too!

It could be different on other models / years, etc, but on my A200, "follow me home" would get fogs and side lights to stay for 20 sec.
There's "headlight delay" feature as well, that keeps front power socket, fogs and sides on for about 60 sec I think.
No idea if these are supposed to be the same, as I acquired a couple of new lighting features, after the UK Mode was deleted.

Thank you one and all. I had no idea that one manufacturer could have so many ways of turning the lights on and off.
TODE..I do indeed have the inteligent light system. Thank you. I think you may have solved it.
DAVID...Also thank you.
ASH...I thought this may be the case so I turned it off.:)
GLK...I have also used the parking lights.
Thank you all who responded.
