Hopefully somebody can help, so that a colleague does not get ripped off by the D(st)ealership !!!

A friend has a left hand drive SLK 230 (2000), which he is now wishing to register in the UK. In order to do this he must change the headlamps and the speedo.

The prices he has been quoted are nothing short of extortionate.

Does any body know where he can get genuine Mercedes parts without getting seriously fleeced.

Thanks in advance for all help....

Depends if you wanna bodge it or not...

You can make a 202 clock fit it, cant remember what, but something is missing from the 202 clocks (think it may be roof related)

Also, on all other models, you can remove the headlamp glass, from the headlamps, and just order new headlamp glasses.

RHD and LHD Light units are the same as far as i am aware, and i sell absolutely loads of RHD headlamp glasses to ppl just like you who are bringing in LHD cars.

Cheers for the information,

I am sure just buying news lens for the lights will be a #### site cheaper than the £ 150 +vat each he was quoted.

I will get him to check out regards the speedo....

How can he get in touch with you for prices etc....

Personally I have absolutely no intention of registering my Benz's in the UK. The road tax and insurance are obscene !!!

Once again cheers.

I got a quote of £50 each for the headlamp glasses for the w202. As for the instrument cluster, I bought the cluster for a w208 facelift CLK55 ///AMG for only £250ish including VAT brand new from the stealership so the SLK cluster shouldn't be too bad, although IIRC it's quite a complex looking thing on the SLK isn't it?

The clk cluster would pron look better than the individual dials

take the underside of the dash off (behind steering wheel etc), reach up and then push it out with your hands. Be VERY careful with it as these things are delicate and you don't want to bust up your cluster or blow any bulbs. Don't forget if you swap the instrument cluster you can sell the old one on german ebay .

Shude, little tip, you dont need to take the underdash out, mercedes have there own little hookes, wqhich go between the dash and the clocks and pull it out, without the removal of anything! We have bent a couple of butter knifes to do this at work...anything flat will do the job, but be careful ofd the size of the 'hook' as it could ruin your dash....

BTW, i have brand new clocks from a C43 AMG, never been out of the box

exactly, pushing the cluster from behind eliminates that risk, and only takes 5 mins longer.

I would imagine the miles will pop back up onto the screen when the new cluster goes in , or is that wishful thinking?

Yeah right! You have to get the stealership to dump the data from one cluster into the other. Depending on how you get on with your stealership this could be an easy job or a pain. You could also try an independent garage.

EDIT: price of those hooks from the stealership is £8.73 +VAT btw, cheaper than e-bay

Home-made hooks from coat-hanger wire work very nicely. Hook part should be at 90 deg or v. slightly acute, max 5mm long.

good idea but it's only a tenner to reproduce the "stealership effect" in your own garage
