Hello Mercedists!

I've always loved Mercedes but never owned one until last Wednesday when I PX'ed my own trusty and much newer Mazda for a 2000 CLK 230 kompressor which I have barely driven apart from back to the shiesting dealer who is straight out of Matilda, the movie (the Danny de Vito character).

Anyway, when you drive it and then put your foot down to the floor it won't go more than 20 - 40 miles and will never ever exceed 3000 revs. When driving normally and just gradually increasing speed, it's smooth and lovely and drives like a dream and I really love the warm seats! And when you gradually increase the speed it seems to do this effortlessly. But if you needed to get away in a hurry then you're completely and utterly buggered.

So took it back to the dealer on Thursday, who had it until last night. He said it was a coil pack and then looked me in the eye, assured me it was repaired and that it drove as it should so again, I drove it home, pulled out onto the A21, floored it and failed. Nothing was different! It was at the 'mechanics' for a whole 4 days and was exactly the flipping same! Had a look at the 'replaced' coil packs, each one just as dirty and dusty as the other and although I'm no expert, I have watched Columbo in the past, and could tell immediately that no fingerprints on or near the coils, engine or general vicinity tell me confidently that no work had been carried out at all. My boyfriend rang Danny de Vito to tell him it was the same and either he or his mechanic was a lying thieving person and it was left that he would ring this morning after speaking to mechanic to see what to do next.

Meanwhile I've googled the problem and was pointed to similar stories on this forum and it sounds to me that the car is in limp home mode, but why?? I don't want Danny de Vito dealing with it anymore as I don't trust him to do the right thing, so am considering taking it to an authorised dealer to put it on the computer to find out why it's limping home but is this going to cost a bomb? I really really adore this car and want it working ASAP but not sure what else to do. I'm really concerned the problem is going to be a gear box issue and then I am truly shiested! Any advice much appreciated? Thanks for reading, K.

You should let them have a go at fixing it first. As you bought it from a dealer you should get 3 months warranty, if there struggling to find the fault suggest that they could use an independent MB garage to run the checks on a star tester at their expense.

Turns out a girl at work's husband works for MB in diagnostics, so he had a look and did his star thing and it was a fault with the MAF, got the part fitted and it drives so lovely, I can't believe what a difference it made. I'm so pleased it is all fixed and feel confident about it being a good car after having the mb dealer rather than the one I bought it off, although he has agreed to pay half for the cost of MAF which is very decent of him. :)))

Thank you, really though I was going to end up with a lemon.. Phew!

Very common fault.
