Big grey relay MB 0025422619 looks favorite.
A 4 blade unit having a 50 amp capacity.
Usually the ASD has bigger blades than the rest in the pack.
First test is to activate the relay and check Ohmn resistance across switched contacts

So I’ve not had a chance to test the relay yet (will do this weekend) but I just spotted something that got me thinking and Googling.

I noticed when I got in the car earlier that my centre dash display was already on when I got in the car (the one which shows mileage, messages, etc). When I got back home I turned everything off, got out and locked the doors and the dash display stayed on. Before I got out the car I could still hear something electrical running but I don’t know what.

So when I googled it there seems to be a lot of talk about a faulty SAM. Could this possibly cause the transmission problems I’m having?

Some other problems I’m having with the car at the moment:
- ESP fault message
- Intermittent (well most of the time) boot release not working (I’ve had it apart and inspected it and it looks fine)
- Right mirror indicator fault message
- Windscreen washer level low message even though I know it’s well above the minimum level
- Heaters only blow cold or hot, no in between
- Intermittent passenger side vanity mirror light not working

From what I could find those kinds of faults can be caused by faulty SAM’s, so question is, could that be causing my transmission problems?

Hi stitcho i’ve had this problem have an automatic gearbox stuck in gear and hard to get out of park I found out it was the brake light switch on the brake pedal I change this and it fix a problem well worth trying first as this operates lots of things including taking it out of park etc. Good luck 🤞

When i had the same symptoms a few years ago on an SLK a new battery fixed it, might be worth borrowing one to try?

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll give those a try. Just got in the car this morning and something was still running so it’s definitely not powering down.

OK from your posting narrative & in case you have a parasitic draw .

Here's simple technique to trace circuits still "live" drawing current after car shut down.
Be aware that modern cars need to go to go to sleep so letting them power down is essential
Follow the instruction using a simple QUALITY multimeter which we call DVOM on my side of the pond .
All the best

So I got fed up of trying to find the fault myself and took it to a specialist garage this morning. Basically it’s a knackered TCM and speed sensor plate which I’m annoyed about as the gearbox place I took it to last time should have spotted that.

Whole host of other problems with the car which is going to cost a fortune to fix so looks like it will be going to the scrapyard in the sky soon 😞

Well applaud you for having a bash at it .
Without scan tools and some diagnostic knowledge its a hard job to diag' the TCM system if you haven't had experience with it.
You know even some Pro shops can't diag it properly, and we had something similar only recently where the shop in question just threw its hands in the air! --We are done!
I hope you got something out of the exercise, and be thankful it wasn't some other brands/models I might mention that are worse !!.
Like many consumer durables after some years of service its time to give it the heave ho!

Of memory quite a few years ago I /We had a loyal customer who had a P38 RANGEROVER .
One day he buggered up the engine with a $4500 estimate to repair it.
Being Denver Broncos fan he was fearing the loss of his babied car & the exclusive bumper stickers on the back.
I said Joe have you bought a new refrigerator recently --Yes--=& do you like the new ice cold beers you get when watching the Broncos on TV !
Do you miss the old refrigerator today -No.
Do you have a flat screen TV and miss the old Sony you flung beer cans at when the Broncos lost a game?
Well Joe you won't miss the the bloody thing, at the Push Pull or Drag trade in at MedVed new or used car lot. Or donate it for a tax write off !

All the time his missus was few places behind him giving me the thumbs up. 👍 👍
Joe gave it the heave ho!
All the best
