Hey guys!

I've got a W210 E300TD (OM606) 1998. My turbo has some issues... it goes into limp mode every now and then and I have to restart it like 3-4 times to make the turbo work.

Would any one know what can be wrong? How can it be fixed?

Thanks alot.

Cheers!

Hi, check first the map sensors connection and clean it. And most easy way to start is to get codes read :) beleave me this is easiest way

Hello!

I got the codes read at the dealership a few days back and there was nothing there.

Would cleaning intake manifold, intercooler, MAF and MAP sensors make a difference?

I have heard oil clogs the manifold and intercooler and drastically reduces performance. I actually feel lost power even when the turbo is working.

Am sure that would help! What sort of mileage is it?

112K kms on the clock but this problem was there even at 45K on the clock thats when I bought it.

Its well maintained and regularly serviced.

Limpy could be a bloqued EGR valve. Did you had a look at it? Is it working? Best thing is to clean it, perhaps your vaccum pump not working and doesn't open the EGR, if so the car goes in limp...
You coud try to suck the tube to feel if anything is moving, but better take the manifold off and do a clean.

Okay I will do it today.

Clean everything.... egr intercooler, manifold and the piping.

Like I said i got it checked and there were no codes..

Just because there are no codes it does not necessarily mean nothing is wrong.

It is all about how good the user of the Star is. Anyone can read codes but interpriting the live data to see what is happening is the skill;).

Hey guys!!

I removed and cleaned the MAF and MAP sensors, all the intercooler piping, intercooler and intakemanifold. Manifold and cooler didnt have a lot of oil in them but the aluminium piping did have oil specially the one with map sensor.

Its a bloddy hectic job took all of my sunday.I havn't driven the car yet, lets see if there is any difference.

Just to check whether egr was functional, I sucked the tube but it didn't open. But when I pressed it with a screw driver it went in smooth; didnt feel stuck but it did take a lot of force to go in. I think the suction from my mouth was not enough to overcome the diapharm/spring pressure in the egr valve??

Takes quite a vac to open the egr.

Common mod on landrovers is to blank the egr to stop all the crap and gunk getting into the inlet manifold.

Search on e bay tdi/td5 egr blank plate.

Always blanked mine and never had any problems with running or mots etc.

You need an electronic MOD to cut off the EGR on the E300TD, if not it will go in limp mode, this is why I thought it could be the bother for the OP as if the EGR is not working ( same as blanked) it will trigger the limpy modus.

About sucking on it I am not sure but I would thought that it should be enough to move the EGR, maybe not as Lynall said? Hopefully by cleaning it and move it around it would have dislodge it a bit and it will work fine now.
The manifold is a pain to take off... I had to do it too many times, but after awhile you get use to it :)
Hope it all goes running fast again now.

turbo needs replacing

Hi guys, after my e320 cdi going into limp mode on a few occasions during the last few weeks I had it put on a star machine at an independent. This showed a problem with the turbo. He recommended I took it to a dealer as there had been a recall on some chassis nos but unfortunately not mine.Just been told I need a new turbo unit at a cost of£1065 supply and fit inc vat.
Also I have the cost of the diagnosis at £195.50-phew!!
I'm going to have to have it done obviously but I think it's a poor show needing to replace a turbo unit at 74000 mls on a supposedly quality car.

It's a shame but it does happen. The car could have suffered from a variety of contributory actions ie extended oil changes, poor quality oil, driver abuse, high speed driving with no cool down period for the turbo etc etc. Also, the turbo itself might have been what my dad would have called a 'Friday afternoon' product. Something which slipped past quality control.....

This is the joy and fun factor of owning a car/bike/van etc! Honest..... :p

Just don't let it put you off what is otherwise a quality car.

Hi, just picked my car up and left the dealership to have a haggle with merc uk.As my car has always been serviced on time and had another seriouss fault at 53000- the electrohydraulic unit in the gearbox- I am a bit miffed to say the least- not what I expect from a merc!

Hey guys!!

Lynall... i do have a TD5 defender and I wana cut the egr off it. Thanks for the info!

Oliver..

The car is definitely faster than before now.. no doubts about that. But I dont really know if it is going into limp mode.. as it never did it everytime even before the job. I would only be able to tell if the issue has been resolved or not after a week or two. Untill now it hasn't gone into limp mode.

The first time I removed the manifold it was a pain but now I'm a pro at it; have done it like 8 times now.

I think you are sorted now, hopefully. :D
If its all clean and you go in limp mode I'll check if the EDG vaccum pump is correctly working and if it is, look at the MAF.
Happy day.
