My records of budget motoring with a 1989 W124 200E.

18-Mar-07 BOUGHT FOR £500.00 (one owner FSH, mostly MB. Bought on eBay, never looked at it, and I was the only bidder).
fix osf door trim £0.00
top up coolant £0.00
23-Mar-07 f\o\s winder mech £40.00 (second hand off fleaBay)
elec aerial £33.00 (GSF)
24-Mar-07 sony cd player £30.00 (second hand locally)
sony lead £15.00 (some local shop, only for locals)
27-Mar-07 oil\air filter £12.23

30-Mar-07 wiper 24" (about £8 GSF)
plugs x 4
trip to france. No faults in 1400 miles average 32.5 mpg

31-Mar-07 rotor arm dizzy cap £17.39

21-Apr-07 door check strap £8.70
repair central locking air leak in boot £0.00
06-May-07 10W tail bulbs £1.25

14-May-07 rainbow LX120 speakers 100W £61.94 (SOUNDS GREAT! see other thread)
paint air filter cover. £0.00
23-May-07 aerial fixing rubber £1.80 (gsf)
rear brake pads £16.00 no difference,
24-May-07 hand brake shoes £13.51 (GSF)

13-Jul-07 mot £50.00 failed on exhaust and bracket.

19-Jul-07 exhaust down pipe & fitting kit £88.13 (GSF)

20-Jul-07 exhaust bracket £13.04 (GENUINE MB!)

08-Sep-07 ignition leads £55.50 (GSF)

07-Feb-08 fixed odometer £0.00 was showing 129,822 for the last couple of years.

08-Feb-08 s\h o\s wing £15.00 (local scrap yard, shame about the other side)
illuminated sun visors £5.00
21-Feb-08 s\h ovp relay £35.00 (mercman southampton)

other stuff, I had the tracking done and 3 tyres for about £200. It also did another trip to France and again without any complaint, although it did need a top up of oil.

CURRENT TOTAL £1,212.49 and includes the car!

With insurance at under £200 fully comp, and tax being whatever it is, that's what I call cheap motoring.

What else can you get for a shade over a grand. Next year I would expect it to be even cheaper as all the big jobs have been done and, of course, the purchase price is included.

Still to do..... replace n\s\f wing, find that bit of hose between airfilter and rad, possibly replace front bushes (see what next MOt throws up). Due another oil\filter change and will do auto box as well.

Its a pleasure to drive and to own. Everything thing works (apart from passenger door lock) including the sun roof, no leaks anywhere and it always starts. The one detail I like about it is, not only does it have the original tools, and in the original tool roll, but that they are still in the original plastic bag (albeit somewhat used). Are these available from MB? Is there a part number, Malcolm?:)

Looking forward to the next year(s).

Good to see these cars aren't all money pits.

My first year of ownership was a bit different, but I did spend a lot on labour as I wasn't able to do the jobs myself.

I'll dig out the receipts at some point...

This year will hopefully just involve servicing and some paint (maybe a stereo, a viscous fan and an AC top up...)

Things to do: Passenger elec window not working, odometer stopped (on 249K), a few small rust spots, bonnet and wing respray, general tidy up. Suspension creaks and groans more than me!

I love it. :bannana:

Only downside - MPG and Price of petrol:eek:

As we have the same car I just wondered why you needed to have the wiper stalk replaced.

What was happening ?

How did they determine it was the multi stalk at fault and not for example the relay unit for it ?

I am just looking ahead for any problems I should budget for.

Here's mine, for a 1991 300CE-24 bought in late December 2007 with 50523 miles on the clock. Car is currently on 62k.

Pre purchase inspection £ 52.87

51852 miles 19/01/2007 Belt Damper, belt tensioner, adjuster rod, poly V belt, wiper blade £ 415.12

01/05/2007 New seat belt provider tip £ 7.03

54000 miles 03/05/2007 Remove sheared bolt from thermostat housing £ 102.00

16/06/2007 New thermostat £ 13.51

57249 miles 31/08/2007 Replaced discs, pads and sensors, 72k service, replace ATF oil and filter, brake fluid, engine oil and filter, fuel filter, head gasket, plugs, antifreeze, clips, clamps and hoses etc. £2,190.00

59123 miles 08/12/2007 2 Rear tyres (Continental) £ 200.00

11/12/2007 Puncture repair £ 17.50

28/12/2007 Rear springs, engine mounts, rust removal to cross member £ 304.10

07/01/2008 Headlamp wiper blades £ 13.40

Total in 12 months and approx 9000 miles £3,315.53

Aside from an eye watering August trip to a SE MB specialist for a bundle of work, most of the costs have been reasonable. It passed its MOT last christmas with no advisories.

I've had a couple of electrical niggles which I've sorted myself at minimal cost. Recently bought new over mats for £50.

Still to do (been saying this for a while now)..:

Paintwork - remove various scrapes and dings, refurbish wheels
Fix intermittent driver window motor
Install new front springs
Top up AC (it works but could be cooler)
New ipod compatible stereo
If I'm really keen, repair scratches to driver's seat bolster

Well, I self-diagnosed, but the new stalk fixed the problem

Update for 2009, we are using the car far more than originally anticipated, 3 days a week it ferries Junior B to childminder, and 1 day a week its going to Nottingham and back + holidays last year to Cornwall and Brittany.

The car is looking better externally than when purchased following the paint touch ups, internally new overmats have spruced up an already clean interior and aside from the driver's bolster and the mandatory splits to the armrest piping (apparently the estates don't do this..) it cleans up like new despite Junior B's best efforts.

07/02/08 Front springs purchase MB £143.85

25/03/08 Overmats £48.06

03/05/08 Filter element £5.70

28/05/08 Remove and flush radiator £82.25

05/06/08 A/C repaired (new fan relay) front springs replaced, drivers door motor £333.18

02/08/08 Door trim bits, bonnet latch £10.28

09/10/08 Paint to door edges, boot cill, under headlamps £350

71000 miles(ish) 18/11/08 Maintenance service £229.04

72552 miles and 08/12/08 Rear subframe front bushes, front lower wishbone assemblies, MOT (no advisories) £1040.18

11/12/08 New track rod ends and 4 wheel alignment £171.08

Can’t find receipts at the moment for:
New ipod compatible Sony head unit install £300
New OS rear tyre following puncture £120
New NS front window motor from MB £188

Total costs over 12 months and 13k miles exc. Insurance, depreciation and petrol £3.034.59

That’s £6.3k in 2 years or £265 a month or roughly 29p per mile.

Hopefully things will be cheaper this year as the exhaust and gearbox look good for a bit (touch wood)..

Apart from current OVP issue, the car is great and holding up admirably as a family daily driver. The plan was to buy a decent example and run it for 5 years for reasonably economical, depreciation proof motoring. Not sure its on track, but given the state of the used car market, there is too much tied up in it to try to sell, and I don't think I want to… perhaps need my head examining.. :D

Still to do (although not in a hurry)
Refurb wheels
Replace bumper trims
Full mechanical polish
Driver's seat belt provider tip is 3/4 worn through
Front passenger seat belt spring

After a few Amstels,I can just about remember what we have done to our old 1997 w202.
When we bought it it had one owner and FMBSH. Purchased in Harrow for 7 grand in May 2004.
40,000 miles on the clock and now with 81,000 and a drive across Europe and a summer on the bad roads of a Greek island.

This is a list of what we have paid out for in those four and a half years.
3 new tyres.
1 new battery.
2 new front discs and sensors.
1 service at Ians place in Preston that included an air-con re-gas,new back springs and something for the front suspension (?) and an MOT.

I think this adds up to about 1200 quid.

By and large, this is the best car I have ever owned and just to think that when we bought it,my wife wanted a two year old Vectra, Focus, Mondeo type thing.

All we have added to the car is a sublime Kenwood stereo and an I-Pod adaptor.
Sadly now,we have a couple of war-wounds from down town Skiathos.....the drivers side mirror glass doesn't move with the motor,a little knock on the drivers wing (tiny) and I scarred the rear bumper reversing into a plant pot.

The strange thing is that when clean, the car looks like a million dollars and people look and admire it.It also carries my private plate (H9 POO). When my wife picks people up from the airport they think they are travelling in a classy car even though their Jap-box in the UK is probably worth 5X more.

Weird!!

And people say W124 are reliable and cheap to run....

My W210 E300TD has cost a total of 48.7ppm including depreciation to zero. Remove that and it's 24.2ppm for everything...and I mean everything, fuel, servicing, insurance, numberplate, tax, springs, dampers, wheels, etc, etc....

Either I'm a lazy perfectionist, stupid, or bought a lemon... or possibly a bit of all three... :o

You've had your car a bit longer than me, done a few more miles and also you've not as far as I know been hit with major mechanical issues. Just wait, next year it'll cost me £300 for a service  (I wish)...

124s can be cheap to run - I think almost half of my costs have been restoration type jobs rather than absolutely necessary but the attraction of smoking around in a £750 W124 has limited appeal, as does the depreciation of a new car.

With hindsight, I'm not entirely sure I'd do the same thing again.. ;)

True, true and true....but being a 300TD the latter isn't a surprise.

Additional expenditure since above.

New rear box £145
Some oil on a fairly reguar basis

Things to do: Exactly as above, I haven't touched anything. Suspension seems to have stopped creaking and groaning. Nearside headlamp badly cracked needs lens or new unit (whichever comes cheaper and easier)

Still going strong but not used as much recently. MPG still an issue despite drop in petrol prices. Depreciation is now non-existant;)

Ade B the armrest piping does split on estates!!

Will has a point though, looking over this thread, my modern s-class has been cheaper to run over that period. My costs have been just maintenance (and of course fuel, insurance, tax) - no money spent on repairs. The only additional item has been the replacement of the cats (at 6 years old hardly a surprise) but that was under warranty, so no expense for me.

Depreciation must surely be a factor. At least I can console myself that I can't have lost more than £2200 a year so far, probably much less and with a bit of luck pretty much nothing as prices for decent CE's are all over the place.

In theory the longer I keep it, the cheaper it gets as key bits I've now replaced should last another 16 years or so - whether it gets down to sensible levels remains to be seen, but sensible didn't really come into it at the time of purchase..

Should have got a PCP on a 211 ;)

Ade

Be interesting to compare a car bought from new or nearly new and ran until worn out 150/200kish against buying a newish one every couple of years cost wise, ie depreciation and alleged reliability:D against cost and a known quantity oh yes and rust:rolleyes: .

Lynall

I bought the car for 9500.

In the first year on fuel, parts, an accident which cost 2500 (Father drove with handbrake on) and 5 pairs of tyres it all came to near as damn it another 9500.

Over 20,000 miles.

That averages out at 47.5p per mile.

All parts came from MB, always used Super unleaded, car was given 5000 mile oil changes.

Not bad I think.

Dave!

Depreciation must surely be a factor.

Of course, although it's important to compare it like for like (for example S500 with S500, rather than S500 with, say, C200). Let's face it, buying a car is never a good investment :D.

Should have got a PCP on a 211 ;)
:D :D :D
