Hi all my wife has locked our car with the keys inside. Its a 2011 w204 estate, I can see the keys on the boot floor through the tailgate window.
Looking for a bit of advice, do I break the rear quarter glass and fish them out on a hook, or get a home visit from the key specialist and have a key made.

Is there a mobile service does anyone know of that could enter damage free? Thanks John.

Leave her ..

Are you in the aa or rac ?

Just a thought can you still see the keys from the rear door glass, thats a lot cheaper to buy on ebay and it is a DIY job.

The AA and RAC handle this kind of thing all the time.

I think it depends on the call out engineer whether it's a creative break-in or a sub-contract to a locksmith job.

Equally, if you have a good local locksmith, it's a pretty routine break-in for them.

I'd be wary of breaking glass as replacement glass often looks odd and you can damage more paintwork and trim that you intended.

Do you urgently need into the car ? The other option would be to order a new key from the dealership against the chassis number .

Different dealers vary in their requirements to order keys ; MB Glasgow only asked for sight of my V5 and driving licence , some want your passport and others want to see the car ( which in your case would mean sending someone out ) .

The fob part of the new key would need programmed to the car , which needs Star , but the blade key would open your car and allow you to get at your existing key to silence the alarm / start the car .

All depends whether you can wait the week or so it would take to order from Germany , but that would get you into the car with zero damage , and you would then have a spare key , which I think you will want anyway .

My mates daft daughter locked her keys in her Fiesta a while ago. We called the AA and a guy came round with lots of long hooks, plastic wedges and protection and sorted it next to no time.
Quite interesting to watch him in action.

Just to add to the above , the last I heard a new key from the dealership was about £240 , some then might charge you for coding the key to your car over and above ; if you are a regular customer some might not charge you any more .

Weigh that up against the lesser cost of a third party key which you might find elsewhere, plus the cost of any damage that might be done breaking into the car ( I think most third party places need the original key to copy it ; AFAIK only a dealer can order a new key against the chassis no ) .

And I think you will still want a spare key now this has happened.

Thanks everybody, I thought my Green Flag membership had lapsed but checked and I still have two weeks left.
I gave them a ring and they said they will be with me before seven this evening.
Fingers crossed. Will report back later. john.

Call a lock smith, i had the keys locked in my car and a guy came out with a slimjim and a belt looking thing that he was able to slide through the door and use the belt thing to pup the lock up. He was in the car in about 20 seconds.

Silly question but how do you lock your keys inside a car these days - cant be that easy to do?

Surely if the door is locked you can’t put the keys inside, and if you get out of the car with the keys inside the door opens

I’m sure you’ve checked but you’re certain that all four doors and the tailgate are locked? :)

If you can smash a rear light to get in you might find it easier/cheaper to replace than a window.

If you are a member of the breakdown services, use them.
All are used to gaining access to the interior without a key.

Very easily done. Open the tailgate with the car locked, place keys on boot floor and close tailgate. There may be other ways.

Did that on my SL, opened boot with dedicated boot button on fob, put keys in boot with other stuff then closed it. £180 later I had my keys back......... 😢

I could do that with both the S204 and the SLK. Luckily we have 2 keys for both, and after a similar escapade with our 968 coupe some years ago (and an earlier one when the wife did exactly that with a Citroen estate) whenever we go out, wife always takes "her" key in her handbag!

You'll have to make sure Julie takes a spare next time , be cheaper :thumb:

I’m so used to Keyless Go you forget

Just tried on my GL and it’s impossible to lock the keys in.

Vehicle locked - if you open the tailgate via the fob or the handle it opens.

Leave key inside, press the lock button and it won’t attempt to close as it knows the key is in the wrong place.

Press the usual close button instead, tailgate closes but won’t lock the key inside. Sets the alarm anyway and the alarm goes off if you open the tailgate later on (obviously as soon as you press the key buttons the alarm is silenced)

Possibly an overlooked advantage of the Keyless Go system - not only can you not lock the keys inside accidentally, but you’re less likely to do so as you have no need to take the key out of your pocket (and sorry it’s of no help to the OP’s circumstance)
