Good news for motorists though, less congestion and no chance of having your mirrors removed by a passing bus :)

Could we pay them to stay on strike?

Cough, cough.

Say 10 mile journey, bus takes 70 passengers, regularly changing so say 150 occupants. Cars take 4 passengers maximum and an average of 1.7 so an additional 88 cars per bus off the road.

Hmm, less conjestion..

Don't be silly, people who use public buses can't afford cars anyway, don't you remember what Maggie said?

A man who, beyond the age of 26, finds himself on a bus can count himself as a failure.

Utterly ridiculous.

Whilst I concur with most things Maggie stood for, she was obviously not a woman of wit.

I use buses every weekday, yet I have a rather nice Merc sitting in my drive.

If she wants to generalise, then so can I. She wasn't always right.

True, though personally I think that particular statement was a masterstroke.

Since I'm at University I use the University-provided coach service in the week to get from halls to the campuses, but that's about it. I do my best to avoid the public buses and the great unwashed.

I have to say i rather like the bus, the oyster card system is a briliant invention, where i live in london there are useful routes that have numerous buses on them.

best of all our youngsters love em and its a very happy trip out on a rainy day to take them on the bus somewhere for a twenty minute ride one way have a coffee/juice and come back, it reminds you of how uncynical and enthusiastic we all started out.

It's OK for occasional use in some situations, but imo the UK has far too many buses, and too many people that have become dependent on them.

okay but whats the solution for people who a) can't drive for medical/age reasons b) can afford another transport - bus is pennies per mile to the consumer c) dont want to own a car for environment/lifestyle/hassle reasons.

at the end of the day the more people who use the bus the better the road system works for those of us who can/want to drive.

to drive a car and want less buses is a mildly contradictory standpoint as i see it....

Walk, bike, taxi, a lift with a friend?

c) dont want to own a car for environment/lifestyle/hassle reasons.

They are cutting their noses off to spite their faces, and most people know my opinions on all the 'green' nonsense.

Not really, buses are a nuisense on the road because of their bulk, sluggishness and the fumes from their diesel engines.

One day you WILL need a bus for any number of reasons. Then you might change your mind and realise that some of those comments are a tad wrong.

well I'll make sure to tell my sister that. She doesn't own a car and doesn't want to, she lives in suburban london but on the bus network and simply cant justify a car's expense. she commutes by bus, socialises by tube mostly and by and large finds the buses very good.

Are you equally opposed to smaller single deck buses (or the green varieties that presumably dont produce fumes) or indeed lorries, rubbish trucks that with their bulk, fumes and frequent stops must be equally disruptive to your cars ambience, routine and timetable.

It comes across as if your priority is your own personal experience of travelling in your car and everyone else is simply a nuisance trying to get their journey done.

My experience up in Glasgow is that evertime there is a "situation" in the traffic like a blocked lane or blocked junction a bus is to blame. Whilst per sq ft they take more people whole lanes are given over to the gargantuan things, essentially halving the amount of road space a car users can use. They also pull out in front of you making town driving much harder for the car driver. In other words they impede traffic flow, causing congestion.

These days pedestrain safety is a big thing, and is used to justify anti 4x4 rants bu saying 4x4s will maim a padestrian, well a bus will do worse. A friend of our old cleaner was seriously injured when a bus ran a red light and ploughed into his car, a car vs car impact would have been much less severe.

In peak times they are very busy, but the rest of the time they roam our cities not often near full capacity (from what i've seen in edinburgh and Glasgow) belching out black smoke and lots of CO2 (important for the greens but I couldn't really give a t055 about that  )

I'm actually inclined to agree with MS500 on this one, the only issue being without buses we'd have a lot of cars parking in the city which would be very interesting. So c'mon NCP, build more parking :D

However London has a good tube network, rail networks so I don't see the issue for them.

Bus routes don't run along the same lines as the tube/overland rail services in London. millions of people don't live within a walk of their nearest tube/rail station and thus the bus routes compliment the t/r network

my commute to work would be 35/40 mins walk, 15/20 by bus, 25/30 by tube 10/15 by car (not including finding parking space) and 8 by motorbike.

oh and one more thing most of the bus lanes near me are 8-10am and 4-7pm only.

Smog is a completely different thing to 'greenhouse gases'.
