Did something similar in my Saab 9-5 a few months ago - large estates sure come in handy sometimes. I'll miss that aspect of the car now it's gone.
 
Plus even longer items can be put on the roof rails !
 
Agreed , the big advantage of the estates is not risking getting stuff wet on the roof ; however if passengers are going to be displaced the roof bars are a good option .

I bought a set of Thule roof bars for my W123 estate , used them with both of my W124 estates and now continue to use them with my W126 by virtue of a different foot pack .
