Look down

Many years ago a knowlegeable friend of mine advised me always to look upwards wherever I walked, as many of London's building's most interesting features were to be found from the first floor upwards. Sound advice, indeed.

However, every now and then it can pay to look down...

croc.jpg

A chained crocodile, complete with rockery and waterfall, occupying a lightwell just off Manchester Square. (No prizes for guessing who occupies the premises.)

fiat250_2.jpg

A Fiat "250" gracing the basement of a mews house elsewhere in W1.

basement.jpg

A scary-looking basement excavation in progress in W8.

horseblock.jpg

A horse-block with an illustrious sponsor, outside The Athenaeum.

facade.jpg

The grand-looking side elevation of the Farlows building in Waterloo Place gives up its secret at basement level.

And finally, the base plate for one of the "Legible London" sign posts that seem to be popping up all over the West End.

This is what I saw when I looked over the balcony from the 1st floor in Peter Jones this afternoon. Beats dumping it in a crèche, I suppose...

I often walk by that crocodile at Lacoste.
Wonder how many times it was nicked before they chained it up?

Thank you.

Your punctuation's fine - but there's a glaring error in post #1.

'Knowlegeable' or 'building's'?
Or am I walking into a devious grammar trap?

Building's should have been buildings'. Hadn't even spotted that I'd left the "d" out of knowledgeable. But then, my typos are both legion and legend. To make matters worse, I've just realised I also gave the wrong location for the house with the scary basement excavation.

Occasionally one of our customers demands "ground truth parameters " before believing our claims concerning our carpets' special stain and soil resistant coating Peter Jones said today.

I guess they're just trying to plug a gap in the market but you can be sure some bright spark will revolt...
