I am looking for another car to sit alongside the GL320 and the Mini, both of which my wife uses (and needs) most of the time. The new car will be for me and used primarily for motorway commutes. I will not bore you with the huge list of cars that I shortlisted! However, I have started homing in on a medium size diesel engined car, with a few luxuries and comforts. With a budget of £8K the Jaguar X type diesel estate ticks all the boxes. Tough diesel engine, good economy and a decent name helped my choice.

I have seen this particular car:

2004(04) 2.0D Jag X Type SE Estate, British Racing Green, Champagne leather and most of the decent toys with the exception of Navigation, which I am not bothered about. The car is at an independent dealer.

5 Doors, Manual, Estate, Diesel, 48,405 miles, Metallic British Racing Green with Cream Leather, 1 Owner. ABS, Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Climate Control, Cruise control, Adjustable seats, Driver airbag, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Electric windows, Foglights, Front armrest, Electrically adjustable seats, Head restraints, Folding rear seats, Leather seats, Passenger airbag, Power assisted steering, Rear armrest, Remote locking, Roof rails, Side airbags, Radio/CD, Rear headrests, Traction control, Electric Mirrors with Fold, MFD Computer, Wood/wood effect trim, Full Service History. Insurance Group:13, £7,390

The car looks great in the pictures, it is in Kidderminster, 120 miles from me, so popping round and checking it out is difficult!

Does anone have any experience of X Types? I know they use the Ford TDCi diesels. The price seems about right, I think. I will be driving 15K + miles per year and will probably keep it for two years or so.

Hello

My brother currently has a X type 2.0d saloon as a company car, he previously has had an Estate with another company.

Both are sport models with the 17" alloys, estate I think looked nicer.

Now my brother does 60K + miles a year so does almost live in the car. The first one (the estate) was in the garage a LOT, not little things either such as gearbox out twice. Lots of little problems also.

Drives well, does 50mpg if your steady (manual 2.0d). I find the seats a bit narrow if you a little big... ooh and pumps a lot of black stuff out when you use the power just like fords...

Overall when he had the estate he would NOT have recomended anyone buy one, certainly not with your own money.

Then he changed companies and was given what ever car they had for now and guess what he's given a Jag x type sport 2.0d but saloon. He actually so far likes this one. Misses the cruise control but its not broke yet... Looks quite nice in a darl blue with mushroom leather and 17" sport alloys.

I guess doing 100K miles in a car can put you off one quickly but giving it the benifit of the doubt he quite likes it. The SE will have 16" alloys and although probably smother they do look small. The estate is also not very big (more like a tourer aka 3 series) ooh and not much room in the rear if your carrying tall passengers.

Overall though for the money its rarer than a lot of cars, good mpg, lots of toys and you probably will not lose that much. Personally I would go for 17" alloys and not sure on green....

Something different though for the price and it sounds ok.

PS I've travelled 500 miles round trip just to view my wifes car and then went back to actually do the deal..so 150 miles is round the corner.. :)

in fact bros old car with wifes new...

My ex wife had an X-Type, although it was a petrol not diesel and was brand new. We never had a problem and I liked the car, although ours was fitted with optional 18" wheels which made the ride very harsh indeed, I'd certainly go with 17" as a maximum.

If you can find a 2.2d the power is noticeably different.

I liked the car and never quite understood why it was so poorly rated, but then I've always liked Jags, particularly the interior that make some cars twice the price look tacky inside.

Thanks for that, suppose it could happen in any car (he says hopefully!). I would make sure I bought a decent warranty from Warranty Direct to cover any unforeseen mechanical incidents. A condition of sale, if I bought this one, would be that it is serviced at a Jaguar dealer for a little bit of extra piece of mind. I know what you mean by the green paint, however, it contrasts nicely with the champagne leather. If I had a choice I would go for a blue one. Also agree ref wheels the 16" do look a little small, but it will save a few pennies on tyres I suppose. Cruise control is an absolute necessity for me, I will do a lot of motorway miles.

Space isn't ahuge issue, the kids may go in the back occasionally and the dogs will also fit in but I will mostly be on my own. It is a little more 'unique' and much less of a 'run of the mill' car than the others I have looked at (407s/Volvo S60s/Honda Accords). I will have to drive down to see it in the GL this weekend if the Mrs gives me the green light!

Personally I'd save the money on the Jag and go for a Mondeo TDCi. The new shape one will soon be in grasp. If your feeling MBish an 04 C220cdi or 270cdi is comfortably in reach. As is any VAG 1.9/2.0Tdi engined estate, just pick your badge, Posh+audi middle=VW budget but good=skoda.

I have owned an ST 2.2TDCi Mondeo before. OK but common :p . It would be nice to have something a little unusual. I did look at the Skoda Superb, lovely lovely car but............................................ the badge...... (and would it go with my 'image' :p )

Jag I guess ticks the boxes, would a C220/270cdi be any more or less on the money, or a Passat/A4. Its a shame you'd discount a Superb due to the badge/image if thats the car you are hankering after...

last weeks 5th gear had a N redg jag for under £1k and looked ok

as your doing motorway miles then id get an old e class or s class as they are cheap but damn comfortable

or i know of a twin turbo merc coupe for sale (cough cough)

The idea of a diesel FWD estate jaguar fills me with utter sadness.

They are supposed to be nice cars mind you and the one in my road seems to be ageing very well compared to the other repmobiles.

Dave!
