Hi

The mb bug has bitten me again so looking to add a 560 sel to my my collection :bannana:

A few on ebay, at present , but guy reluctant to allow me to view so not realy interested, but one looks a good car but will arrange a viewing.
missed out on a cracker near Manchester before christmas due to snow and notting being able view.

But any advice welcome, but cannot be that much more than on my sec, only the hydromatic suspension if fitted.

Try over at the official club, there are a few members who own 560SEL's

Tks for that , not sure which site you mean, i have only joined here as i thought it was enthusiasts rather than stiff shirt official sites lol

It's The Mercedes-Benz Club They are the official Mercedes club.

They tend to advise on and sell the older Mercedes such as the 126.

Hi, I don't know if you're still here, but I've just bought a 560SEL and have a couple of thoughts on buying W126 in general, but as you already own a SEC you'll pretty much know it all.

Mine is a 1989 with 104k on the clock and full MB history bought for about a grand. It all works and the car drives brilliantly, but of course it's not perfect in the body department.(4 rusty arches, 3 new bumper chromes needed - few dents and scratches)

It needs body work which will make it a lovely car. My thoughts on this are that if you buy one that is seemingly in perfect body condition how do you know that the bubbles in all the usual areas are just about to come through, or have just been cheaply blown over. This is why on the 2 W126's I have owned I've bought them needing this work as then I know it's been done properly.

I love mine, it is a brilliant car and will be hanging on to it for some time yet.

Thanks for that , makes sense what you said.
The vehicle near me has chrome arch trims ?, and the guy has not come back re viewing it ?
it was owned i believe at one time buy a member on here , fella selling it is still using the pics , from what i can work out he bought it from nearly a year ago

so am not prepared to bit on a car that is already over 1k and has been treated to Halfords finest around the arches without seeing it

There is one on Ebay with chrome trims.

It needs new front wings. Also looks as if the rear quarter is rusty on back pass side above bumper, but could be dirt or something - basically what the seller has said. Beware of rusty boot, clarify what that actually means, that is bad news if it is the rear screen surround or panel below rear window.

Nice mileage and interior looks good, it seems the rear foot rests are not in place (should be in foot well behind front seats)

Someone might correct me, but I thought the hydro pneumatic suspension (financial disaster) had a height control "knob" on the right of the steering column. This one doesn't seem to have that knob.

Check ECUs are OK as they are specific to 560 I think, and prone to giving trouble.

Nice colour for a W126 - James Bond baddie car. Shame you can't look at it, but it's reaching what it's worth in my opinion with no history and at least a grands worth of bodywork to do it properly.

Clear lenses on front indicators not to my taste but easily replaced with Orange.

Good luck!

Hi ccaallvviinn
I cannot pm you yet on here as have not made enough posts.

But if you can email me on [email protected] got a few things to ask if you dont mind or can give you a call

if you are to busy dont worry, but its quicker than ping ponging on here

i'd bet my last penny that there will be rust behind those chrome covers!!!

sounds cool mate, nice cars.

Arranged to view the black one yesterday,
Did HPI, came back as cat C in in 1999,

Also need two wings and its gone under the rear window.

Do i hear 500 any where, as no way is it worth what its up to now on ebay

I've had four w126 cars and they've all had rust. These days they are expensive to run as they always were because MB don't reduce the price of parts as the years have passed by. The rust problems are not just confined to the four wings & boot area under the rear screen. They also develop terminal rust under all the doors ( you have to get down on your hands & knees to inspect properly ) and in all the jacking points which can be accessed by pulling away the plastic lugs ). Personally I would avoid any car with hydropnuematic suspension and wait for a better car and by a better car I also mean a seller who will let you rummage around their car for hours whilst you inspect and check everything. After all there's a good reason why these cars are now dirt cheap.

I see a lot of very rusty cars around - there is a 420 for sale locally with Swiss cheese front wings which is not unusual .

Sadly , I have found two sound cars in scrapyards recently - thanks to scrappage .

My 500 , when I bought it 2-1/2 years ago was in very good condition - it had been owned and well cared for by a funeral director most of it's life before the owner of 1 year who sold it to me . The funeral director had fitted two genuine front wings and had a quality respray in DB199 blue/black ( the original colour ) there is now some slight bubbling around the osr wheelarch where I think there may have been some accident damage in the past as no rust anywhere else . The parcel shelf was dry when I bought the car , but two years on is just starting to show a little water ingress - time to nip this problem in the bud this summer . Doors , jacking points etc are all good .

The 280SE , which I bought a year ago for only £100 , does have a rotten parcel shelf - I cut a sound one out of one of the breakers cars and will try welding this in when I feel brave enough . Sadly rear screen seals are no longer available . This car also needs the rear end covers of both sills doing but jacking points themselves are sound , beyond that a single brake pipe needed for MOT . The drivers door has rust along the bottom edge , but I have a spare one in the correct colour . There was a broken bonnet hinge (common problem) but I fixed that . I knew about the rusty bits before buying the car , but it was cheap enough , and I fancied an early pre-facelift car to go along with my later one . It is far too good to let it go to the breakers , which was its likely fate had I not bought it . Both my cars have excellent bumper chrome .

I'm actually collecting parts to retrofit hydropneumatic rear suspension to my 500 as I use it for towing - having had , and worked on , three MB estates with the same system I'm not scared of it and know it will make a huge difference .

I recently had a quality stainless steel exhaust system fitted to the 500 by PD Gough of Nottingham , who I cannot reccomend too highly - the system is a replica of the original and the car performs flawlessly - MB exhausts for these cars cost double what this system did and would need replacing again in a few years - I know someone in the MBOC who had a SS system fitted there over 20 years ago and still good as new .

The late 500 in one yard near me still has an excellent blue leather interior with heated , memory electric front seats and fixed , heated rear bench . The 420 in another has cloth but was a sound car before being broken . There is also a complete 500SEC in another yard , with Mushroom leather - car has a destruction order due to being 'proceeds of crime' but nothing had been removed when I last saw it a week or so past - it is a nice car in Diamond Blue with 8 hole alloys and good bumper chrome (in Renfrew Autobreakers yard , if anyone is interested I can pass on the phone number but I don't have time to start removing parts and posting them ) .
