Looking to buy a C or E Class estate.

Another question if I may? I have been using a local garage for servicing my cars for years and they have always been really good to me.
Is there anything on these cars that need a specialist Mercedes attention when it comes to service time?
There is a well respected Mercedes garage local to me that my wife uses for her A class and they have the facility to digitally record the service with MB.

After listening to all the good advice given I think I'm going to go for a "PETROL 2.0 C200 SPORT 5d AUTO 184 BHP ESTATE" which I've seen. It's a 1 owner car with 67,000 miles.
Ok, it costs an extra £100 a year to tax and the fuel consumption is about 20% more but it does seem to be more appropriate for my needs.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like a good compromise.

I wouldn't get too concerned about the supposed difference in fuel consumption. Diesels do not give their best on the short journeys you cover so any diffeence will be minimal.

As for RFL, it's under 30p per day extra.
You are also saving the potential cost of DPF and EGR problems.

What year is it? Just for info. really in 2018 the C200 changed from a 2.0L turbo to a 1.5L turbo with 'mild hybrid assistance'. Both were rated at 181 bhp (184 ps), the original version is a simpler setup so might be a better proposition long-term. The C Class estate has grown over the years - we went from a 2007 S203 (2.5 V6 petrol) to a 2019 S205 (2.0 4 cyl turbo petrol), and the newer one is a *lot* bigger inside. It also feels much more 'premium' and upmarket - we've had it 14 months now and have been very pleased with it.

Hi Gary, that is a good choice to make. OK, mine is a Saloon but it is the 2.0ltr Petrol but fuel wise on a good day can return me around 44mpg which isn’t bad. I think you should maybe be a little cautious however of anything newer than 2018 as they are 1500 Hibrids and are little more complicated whereas the 2.0ltr is pretty straight forward.

I've just had a look at it's MOT history on the Gov.org website which shows no previous problems but there is an outstanding recall on it. Am I correct in thinking that this is an issue that will be sorted at no charge by a local dealership?

Yes, any dealer should carry out outstanding safety recall work FOC.

I've contacted the local franchise and they say it's an alternator issue and the allocated time for repair is 30 minutes so it must only be a small job.

Even if it was a big job, it would still be free to you if it's a recall; not a factor.

I viewed the car yesterday and it was nice but the offer on my px was too low.
I got a phone call today saying they'd meet me halfway but I'm going to play the waiting game and see if they'll come up any more.

I think you're correct. The dealer hasn't got back to me yet but I'm not going to chase him.

You can get a good or bad example of any make, buy on condition and service history as you would any car.

Regarding your daily mileage, a diesel really isn't the choice for such short journeys and will not get up to running temperature in the winter. I know petrol engined versions are in short supply but it might be worth waiting a little longer with your search?

I would be concerned over the regular short journey pattern.

The Mondeo is a hatchback so the merc will be bigger.
There is a petrol 65 plate with 67,000 miles at £16,000 in Derby from a car supermarket but their reviews aren't brilliant plus it's over my budget.

So don't buy it then. If it concerns you just look for another one
