Hi,

I am looking to get my first car and looking at the A Class. However i am confused between the different models. I heard most of the 180s and 200s are Renault engines. Are they still okay or should i opt for a mercedes engine.

Just looking at some advice on the engine. I have an A200 AMG Line Executive in mind but now not sure about the engine.

The older 1.5d engine is the renult engine but im pretty sure Mercedes have stopped using it now

I think it is the M282 in the a180 and a200 (2018 to 2023) - they aren’t that unreliable according to reviews. We test drove one a while back, but it had a manual gearbox which didn’t really suit the car. We ended up with a VW polo instead. I would avoid the small diesel engines if I were you, but the small petrols don’t seem to unreliable.

Renault diesel engines tend to be very reliable anyway so it wouldn't bother me.
I'd be more concerned about your mileage/distance:
>10k miles and longer trips = diesel
<10k miles and/or lots of shorter trips = petrol
Hope that helps 👍

There was another thread on here ref renault engines

Definitive list of Mercedes with Renault engines. Help please!
I don't know how to link the tread but it's title is above 👍

thanks for the replies. I was just not sure on the difference. I am also looking at one which has an e (a250e). With petrol Parallel PHEV. is that hybrid or fully electric. I prefer one with petrol but this looks very tempting for the price

PHEV = Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle.

The 250e is very nice to drive - quite spritely and might make sense if you do lots of driving short distances in London and have a place to charge at home. It depends on how worried you would be with an aging hybrid system depending on how long you intend to own the car for.

thanks, i am looking at maybe 2/3 years with that car. Can i use petrol on it or will i have to plug it in from time to time. Im basically trying to use it as a normal petrol car as the price and specs are very good for what it is. Justnot sure about the hybrid part

You can use it just on petrol and the battery should recharge slightly with the engine and regenerative breaking, but with the extra weight and complexity of a battery. If I were you I would go and drive them and see for yourself which you prefer. If only owning it for a few years and it’s quite a new car I wouldn’t be too worried about the hybrid system. Also I assume, but don’t know, that congestion charge and tax would be cheaper with the hybrid.

There would be no emissions charge but congestion charges will apply.

Ah right okay thank you. Yes i need to test it but for the price and spec it looked quite good.

Is there a huge difference between the A180 and A200. Should i go for the cheaper 180 or is 200 worth it in the long run?

They both have the same m282 engine - just one tuned to have slightly more power. It may be something you could upgrade (tune) on an a180. It depends on where you drive most often, I found the a180 fine on our local roads, but slightly gutless on motorways maybe. When we were looking it was hard to find a well specked a 180, but they were quite new at the time.
