just realised that if we acquire a third car ( possibly a SLK 55 AMG ) we only have NCB on 2 cars, both in my wife's name . Think I might need to acquire one of them in my name ( possibly transfer the A210 ) and then try and get a NCB based on my driving record as second named driver. Anyone got any suggestions based on their experience of owning more than 2 cars? Other option is to sell the recently acquired A210 to solve the dilema

My insurer (Aviva) match up to 5 years no claims across my cars, you can only drive one at the time!
I remember suggesting that to several insurers years ago but they thought I was nuts and just landed from another planet! I guess times change.

We had to start a policy with zero NCD when we went up to three vehicles (of course choosing the one with the cheapest insurance to have no NCD on). I'm sure some companies will do a deal if they insure all of them, but that makes it much harder to shop around come renewal time and you could conceivably end up worse off in the long run.

No problem here. You'll get a significant discount if you toddle over to Aviva, who specifically offer multi-car discounts. They'll copy your NCB AND give you a multi car discount on top.

Brilliant company, excellent UK service desk, quick, effective and, once established, you can do most mods online. Unlike most insurers they don't rip you off with minor charges for admin changes, foreign cover and the like.

Going back to your personal situation: the key thing about those three cars is who do you actually intend to use them day to day? If the SL55 is to be a high days and holidays car, the right answer is to insure it on restricted mileage (5k ?).

Got sorted after a spat with Direct Line. They decided that they would put the A210 on a new policy with me as the main driver ,no NCB but discounts for multicar and having house insurance, no price quoted at this stage. Then quoted an extra £84 for the SLK 55 , as replacement for the A Class. Very good I thought makes £300 for the year . Then we had to start from scratch with the A class., all the questions and silly me happened to mention it had Sports springs fitted! Does it lower the car , I think so I said , result was they declined to cover it .Ok I said will go to a specialist insurer. Then they decide as the policy was new for the SLK , not a switch they wanted £513 .
Good bye I said , cancelled the existing policy for the first car a RAV4 ( cost £216 ) and rang Adrian Flux. All 3 now covered for £800, same cover but XS £250 not £500. Pro rata Refunds on both DL policies with no admin charge as we've only just renewed / set up the cover.

Did this with Aviva when we got the SLK. The matched the full NCD we had on the other 2 vehicles but explained that it was an introductory discount.
If I remember correctly they charged us £75 for the SLK for 6 or 7 Months.
At the end of that year they changed it to full NCD so now we have 3 lots of full NCD.
But at the end of that year they put their prices up for the 2 cars. So moved the cars to Admiral & left the L200 with Aviva
