Loose Pulley?

I can't seem to get a Haynes or Workshop manual for a V6 C-Class so...

Could anyone tell me what this pulley does? The one on my car doesn't seem too solid (the other pulleys seem more 'substantial') and the belt doesn't sit properly on the pulley.

Got this pic off the internet, it looks pretty accurate according to what you can see under the bonnet.

Also, any common areas for oil leaks on the v6 (near the front of the engine)? If this pulley was loose would I get a leak?

Car is a 1998 C240 Sport.

Cheers

Wigs - yes the harmonic balancer issue does apply to yours - having checked it out recently it appears the problem was not so bad over here (possibly becuase of lower temps). The offending rubber bit can be inspected easily enough (mirror on a stick would help for a close inspection). Look out for any cracks or movement of the rubber - I glance at mine every time I open the bonnet,

On the tensioner front I just checked mine and it's rock solid, with the belt well located.

I aslo seem to have a slight oil leak - staining the front, oil filter side of the engine - planning a closer inspection at oil change time - might just be left overs from careless filling last time (not me).

P.S. No Haynes for this model - the one for the rest of the range is useful though.

Has the tensioner worn out, they tend to not move laterally on the shaft if OK.

The 112 engine is normally leak free.

Common areas are rocker covers and oil filler neck

BlackC55 - was wondering if mine was the oil filler neck. Do you know how this is held on? Is it possible to remove/refit without taking the cover off first.

It just unscrews like a filler cap.

You can discard it if you wish and just screw the cap straight onto the rocker cover.

I'll check my 'harmonics' tomorrow when there is daylight.
Tensioner seems solid enough, it just looks a bit 'off'. The rest of the pulleys in there just seem more substantial.

I defo have an oil leak, cleaned it all up on sat after it left a small puddle. The oil returned late the next day, I think it comes from somewhere underneath / behind the fan. I was wondering if there is an oil pressure switch under there or if the pulley bearings leak. Car has done 90k miles.
Is the plastic guard under the engine easy to remove?

Btw, I've only had the car a week, my first ever decent car in 10 years of motoring after a string of un-cool cars. How did I ever cope without leather, auto gearbox, cruise control etc.....

Its beginning to sound a little like your front engine oil seal. Way to check if the harmonic balancer is on its way out is to look at the fan belt while the engine is running and if it oscillates the yes its going.

merc specialist

Front oil seal is on the crankshaft behind the harmonic balancer pulley. One of these jobs that can be simple or difficult depending on experience, tools available and how tight the pulley is keyed on to the shaft. Probably best left to a good mercedes specialist. If the hamonic balancer is gone then probably a good idea to renew the seal at the same time. Won't add much to the cost

As the harmonic balancer could be causing your belt problems, over a period of time it could affect the crankshaft seal as Grober and Ian say, the seal could be OK and just the balancer, but when off it would be silly not to replace the seal

Think you guys might be right about this crankshaft / harmonic balancer oil seal. Bottom of the motor was cleaned up on Saturday and its already covered in oil. Tensioner pulley still doesn't look quite right either. See picture.

Any ideas how much this little lot will cost to fix?
Also, should I go to a Main Dealer? a specialist? or the garage I've used for the past 3 years who I have a lot of trust in?

Cheers.

You can use whom you like to replace the 2 items, the most important bit is to get the correct torque on the crankshaft end bolt, if you do not do the, the key way will wear and render the crankshaft (and engine through the cost) U/S
