Lorry Driver Shortage

or wait for a nice warm sunny day. ok get the hair dryer out...
You’d be amazed how good that signage sticks. I had to remove from trailer a few years ago. Quite a hot sunny day. Wasn’t budging. So I used the heat gun on inside wall of trailer. It came off in a flash. 🥳

Oh I know had, to de-livery a couple of 18T box vans with extensive stuck on leaves livery that took ages

The kid is a hypocrite.

Same as the extinction rebellion founder and various politicians that drive diesel cars. The elites like to tell the plebs what to do but find it inconvenient to do it themselves. It's the new green class system of virtue signalling.

In fairness the kid is not the worst of them in terms of being a hypocrite but she's still irritating.

Today's focus is on HGV drivers, but let's not forget ---seasonal agricultural workers, the food processing industry, the hospitality industry, care home staff together with care in the community and auxiliary nursing staff , whose organisations are all complaining they can't recruit enough people to work in these activities-- typically low paid physical jobs with people working long hours on their feet- jobs which until recently were mainly filled by workers from the EU Eastern block countries .

ps this - [the subject of the thread ] has nothing to do with Greta Thunberg

The B-word thing shouldn't be discussed here.... ;)

But just to say that - like with many other things - we all know that political decisions will always have both positive and negative outcomes, i.e. no one really thinks that it will be all good or all bad - instead, it is always a decision made on balance, and so I think (without taking a personal stance on the matter) that focusing on any one negative or positive effect in isolation can give rise to a misleading impression. And, again, this is a general principle applicable to many situations.

Merely pointing out that the shortage of HGV drivers is not a specific labour shortage phenomenon to be viewed in isolation. I made no comment as to any political implications- just stating facts- I leave people to draw their own inferences as they wish. 🤔

I left my job as a hgv driver back in 1996 just before HGV licence came out . After 10 years of driving a 6 wheeler Foden concret wagon around the country. Only drove on my car licence .Owner of the company took me on a test the first day i was there . It was to back the 10 wheeler along a dirt towpath along the side of a canal with just a few feet on each side .I had never drove anything other than a large car . But i made it .

The hgv test was out before 1996?
Or are you talking 7.5t+

Hgv to me is an artic

Some empty shelves out here in SW France for around 6 weeks now. Dutch and German friends say same is happening in their countries and - anecdotally - also in Italy and Poland.

Nowt to do with Brexit .... but if the continental HGV drivers are still around, why the problem? Supply chain disruption? But why?

My advice .... keep ample stocks in. Tinned stuff and bottled water last ages.

I passed my c+e lgv(hgv class1) test on 21/08/1996.

After the 1st September 1996 there was no longer a direct to c+e lgv test.

You had to do the c test first(which is what I class as rigid above 7.5t) Then once you had that you could do your lgv c+e(artic).

I remember I was in a hurry up to pass before it was all wasted.

Before then there was still the Hgv class 2/3 ( don't know the difference) for rigid trucks above 7.5t.

I could always drive up to 7.5t on a car licence(I think!)
You can still drive up.to 3.5t on a car licence these days( a big transit) on a car licence.

I've lost track of what's what these days, but before 1996 is a strange one to me?
The number of wheels is irrelevant unless you're BJ Mckay!

The unit/trailer combination I drive is 12 on the unit and 20 on the trailer....32 wheels, but it's still only c+e, but it would be stgo(special types general order, which means you are routed and can only go those roads)(don't know what category) if it was on the road.

Also to add fuel to the fire, the cpc regulations of 60hrs(I think)every 5 years classroom work to make you legal on UK roads has also thrown a lot in the mix.....this is why I don't drive LGVs on the road.

hgv 3 used to be heavier than 7.5t but only two axles, hgv 2 was more than two axles ie four axle tipper and hgv 1 is artic. yet wagon and drag ie truck and trailer not articulated is/ was hgv2/3 .
the cpc is 35 hours over 5 years
dont know when it changed but you used to be able to do the "double L" ie not even have a car licence but learn and pass hgv and get a car licence for free
