The wheel lock nut key has gone missing, normally keep it in the rear hatch with the jack, etc. but can't seem to locate it anywhere. Maybe the guys who changed the tyres last did not replace it in the boot. However, I now need to remove the locking bolts which are recessed about an inch deep from the wheel face and have a irregular blunt-point star shaped groove on the bolt head. What would be the best way to remove these bolts without the proper key?

Call the RAC or AA?

They have a special tool.

Why risk harming yourself, your wheel bolts and your wheels?

You could take your identification key to your local Mercedes dealer and I am sure they will order you a new one.

Local MB dealer or wheel/tyre specialist should have a set of the "keys"

Thanks guys. Got the reverse threaded sockets from Machine Mart but the socket diameter is such that they do not even fit in the alloy wheel recess for the bolts. Am returning these this morning. Nothing in service book as I bought them when wheels were upgraded. Typically, 7 years on, I can't find the paperwork or the original pack they came in, so can't order a replacement duplicate key! Don't think they are original Merc but the face groove looks similar to the McGard type so maybe the Merc Dealer may have key that fits, will try the local stealer today and see if any of their keys fit. Other than that, might also try the local tyre joint where they may have an 'alternative' method of removal. Any other suggestions?
Did call the RAC as well, said they would oblige if only I had a puncture and car was undrivable, however, enen then they would 'attempt' to remove the nut but only on the punctured wheel, not all 4! Said they do not have any magic tools and would tow vehicle to a Garage if unsuccessful at removIng lock nut.
On a funny note in this respect, saw a clip on YouTube where a guy attaches a tow rope steel hook to the wheel and pulls it off by connecting to the tow bar on his Shogan and taking off! Talk about frustration!
Anybody got contact details for the 'Chuckle Brothers?' :D

main dealer is ur answer as they will have a set and try each one, then they can order you the correct key .

Try the main dealer first and be prepared to part with £26 for a new locking wheel nut key! Dont forget that if you have lost the box you will also need a set of bolts for the steel spare wheel

Update:
Main stealer, no joy. Turned out that the locking wheel nut is similar in face pattern to Merc nuts but the master keys Merc has do not fit as slight difference in diameter! A friend recommended a local tyre/wheel place, took it there and they had all 4 lock bolts out in about 10 mins with not a mark on the alloys and even replaced with shining new standard bolts. Best bit is they offered me a nice cuppa of strong tea and all done on the house as a new customer incentive. Now that is service!

That really is a great result.

You would have thought they would have thrown in a new set of Continentals!!!
