Hi everyone

I had my car serviced at a Mercedes specialist recently, and since then it's developed a loud noise which sounds like the tappets. As the revs get higher, the noise becomes faster so this leads me to believe its the tappets.

I took it back to the specialist who agreed it was the tappets and changed the oil again - this time leaving the engine flush in for longer and also changed the oil while it was at its hottest. This made no difference however and the noise remains. Having checked with the manual, he put the correct grade of oil in. But the last service i had before i bought the car had a different grade of oil in - a bit thicker.

It's been a few weeks since i had the last oil change, but one thing i have noticed is at tick over, the noise totally disappears.....this is also the same on start up from cold - the noise isn't there. It's only once i get going it really starts getting noisy and really stands out!!

I've tried some hydraulic valve lifter treatment but that didn't do anything. So i was just wondering what you guys think before i spend a load of cash getting the rockers changed?

Is there any physical way of checking the tappets to see if they're worn or blocked up in any way?

Many thanks

Matt

Are you sure it is a tappet noise?

Hi BlackC55, the specialist told me that he was adamant that its the tappets making the noise. It's a very intense tapping noise that increases and decreases with revs.

It is not a big job to investigate.

The rocker covers need to come off and the faulty tappet located. Then the oil feed to the tappet needs to be checked too. I doubt the garage is at fault. Just co-incidence

Ok thanks :thumb: If there was more than 1 tappet faulty, would there be more of a noise/more taps per second if you know what i mean?

Matt

I had noisy cam followers when my oil pump started to fail on a pug. Worth a look.

Hi everyone

Just an update on what i've found. I've located the faulty tappet to be the very top left corner of the engine as I look at it from the front bumper. I've spoken to Mercedes about a replacement part and they informed me that the C32 engine contains 3 different types of tappets (inlet/outlet/exhaust).
So i was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge or info or an engine schematic for the C32 so i can determine which type of tappet i should be ordering, as the guys behind the parts desk at the dealers didn't really seem to have much of a clue :(

Many thanks in advance, Matt
