i am looking to keep the sunroof slide rails nicely lubed to avoid costly motor faliure later .. can anyone tell me if there is a good (tried and tested) lube that can do this job without turning into some guey thing/ or causing some damage etc ? i would idealy want to use the same lube as used my MB, any ideas what the part number is ? failing that a good commercial one will do (i have WD40, but i have a feeling that it not the right product for this job)..

PS. while we are talking lube .. what would be a good grease for the door joints ?

001 989 46 51 'side paste' (i think they mean sLide paste...) 500g retail 19 US dollars

OT - on another site someone asked how much is a new engine for his 600 S class - the epc lists it as 1200104300, engine, retail $40,280

Almost anything except lithium grease would be OK I'd think. I'd avoid lithium as there are electrolytic concerns if you don't know what all the metals involved are. Definitely avoid WD40 or GT85 as they are just solvent cleaners and will do a lovely job of dissolving any lube that is on there and washing it away.

slip slidin'

I read on here to use Finish Line dry teflon from Halfords push bike section. I use it on my panorama roof seal, runners, rubbers, etc. Its absolutely spot on. Spray some in a aerosol lid and apply it with a cotton bud (babies ear 'ole type), let it dry (couple of minutes) and away you go smooth and no squeaks. Downside?, best part of ten quid. If theres a branch of Wilcos' near you the same/very similar is sold there for three quid ;)

Many thanks for all the replies .. they are exactly the answers i was looking for ..

This forum really is the canine's coconuts ! :bannana:

Ok so i have a good idea about what lube to use, how about a good grease recommendations ?

It will be for things such as greasing the wiper mechanisim, door lock/boot lock mechanisms etc ...

again i would be looking for somnething that members have tried with no problems ...

John, in the main the same stuff as I suggested above. Apply it with an artists type 1/2" delicate very flat brush thingy and stipple it into the gaps and crannies, about £3 from an art shop. Other than that simple vaseline but it melts eventually. The other doesnt but does, sooner or later, wash away, about 20 washes. We used to have a moderately high melting point grease in my industry, it was very good but it was also very white. Its made by a firm called Rocol. If you dont mind the whiteness and know a decent plumbers or gas fitters merchant then ask for 'Rocol high temperature gas tap lubricant' they should stock it.

Portzy, thanks for the tip on Rocol, great recommendation and find !!

I have checked the Rocol website and they do seem to sell some seriously high quality lubricants etc.

here is a range of their "maintainance line" of products.. they seem to have thought of a lubricant and grease for everything:

They also have various links on their website on where to order their products online. I am going to order some products through the RS components website :bannana:

Thank you John, I didnt know they had a web site :o . It wouldn appear that the gas tap lubricant is no longer very white, its very black so it must now have graphite in it. Just get it exactly where its needed as it stains. It shouldnt affect rubber or neoprene as there are sometimes 'o' rings in gas taps which are rubber/neoprene also.
