M B COMMAND C D Player!

Is it COMMAND? Whatever it is it's a load of trouble.

I have a year 2000 E320 CDI with the bells and whistles stereo of the time. I haven't a clue what the unit code is or how it is described but, basically it's the one with the screen and the optional controls on the steering wheel.

You get 'Navi', 'CD', 'FM/AM', 'TV' and 'TEL' along the top and then the screen.

Now, life's too short for a telly in a car and I'm not concerned about the navigation or the telephone.

It's the usual basket case with the self-burnt cd to programme the thing.

I'm only into the radio and the C D player.

The radio is brilliant and no problems at all with reception.

The C D player is a nightmare. It has a mind of its own and plays when it wants to do.

In winter in hardly ever plays (laser optic misted up?).

The warmer the weather, the better it plays (when it decides to play).

Here's what I get on the screen:

CD

CD Changer

No CD Changer

CD Drive

No CD

But this is when there is a CD in the player.

Also:

I think the leads of a changer must still be plugged in because when the screen reads:

CD Drive

No CD

It won't play

But:

When the screen reads:

CD0 (Note the zero -possibly pre multi-player)

It plays occasionally.

I've heard the laser optics go on these units so, I thought a remedy would be to install a CD multiplayer via the head unit and just listen to CDs off the multiplayer.

But where to put it.

I've a full-sized spare wheel and no room in the other 'cupboard' over the offside wheel.

Maybe the lower box in the central console? Maybe a small six player in there?

I can't see it could be hooked up to one of these data stick devices.

What are they called?

An M P something 'music player' something.

MP3!

It'd be brilliant if I could but it seems the technology is too old.

I want to keep the whole unit because it suits the car and it's part of the era of the car.

And the aura!

Vielen Dank

(I'm coming over all German!)
