M1 closed after 'suspicious object' found

Had to re-route around via the M40 after seeing congestion when I was about to join M1 at 15a... thank god or I'd still be stuck in traffic now...

Apparently a disposal robot has been called out... bloody hell

It was closed for most of the day and the object turned out not to be explosive. Probably some rubbish chucked out of a car.

If we are going to close roads for every rubbish bag spotted then the terrorist have succeeded in causing major disruption. We were already world class at closing roads even before worrying that everything is a suspect bomb.

Apparently yellow bubbling liquid could be seen coming out of the bag hence the panic

I just drove back up on M1(N) which has not been opened... southbound is still closed!!!!!!!! ****ing hell

Well if it was closed for hours on end... it was more than just a rubbish bag. Clearly they had reason to suspect it was hazardous substance. So even if turns out to be a false alarm... it would seem there was cause for concern.

So why not open a section of barrier up to let everyone do a u turn instead of capturing the traffic from 4AM to 15.30PM? It only takes a 19mm socket & 10 minutes to remove one, maybe we should all start carrying our own?

Really? I saw online they called in a 'barrier cutting machine' ?

I don't know what the thinking is behind road closures but it must be a narrow singled minded view because they don't seem to care about the disruption it causes. Think of the cost to the economy and massive pollution produced. Most times both lanes are closed. OK rubber necking is a problem so reduce the speed limit to 50 MPH or 40 or 30 or even 20. Anything to keep the traffic flowing. It's time the authorities started thinking outside the box. If they don't terrorist's could paralyse this country without having to blow up anyone. I can't help reflecting on the defiant mood of the public following a terrorist incident of "we won't let this change our way life"

The thing is it has already been changed for us.

^ Completely agree.

If the assessment is that it is dangerous to pass the point in question, then gaps in the central reservation should be quickly opened and traffic turned back. Keeping people effectively trapped for hours is lunacy and a demonstration to the "bad guys" of the scale of disruption they can cause with very little effort.

There was acid on the road....

There was acid on the road....

He and the rest of the MSLP crew tend to melt tarmac so no surprise really!

We got held up somewhat by the following closure the other day as well - we managed to get off the main roads early and hit the B roads so only got held up by about an hour:

M3 closure traps thousands of drivers
