M103 vibration at idle in 'D'

Anyone got a suggestion why my car (M103 engine, TE300) vibrates at idle when the transmission is in 'D'? It doesn't vibrate when moved to 'N'. I changed the gearbox mount as it was soft and very squishy and therefore suspect but this has actually made the vibes stronger!
Vibrations smooth away as soon as throttle is applied and car is moving.
Engine mounts perhaps?

Might it be the rpm being dragged too low in D when idling?
If the mounts are shot - I'd half expect some vibration (however fleetingly) to be present at some point in the driving cycle.

Engine mounts ordered. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. If not...................... I'll be back for more advice!

No vibes at any other time. Shakes are very noticeable when engine is warm - bad enough to make me shift to 'N' when stopped at junctions or traffic lights. Idle is 700 rpm when warm and drops to 550 to 600 when in Drive (with foot on brake).

An M102 so not the same engine but I suspect a similar drive belt arrangement. I had a vibration at idle due to a problem with the drive belt tensioner pulley. You could check and adjust if necessary.

A belated update - new engine mounts fitted and vibrations have virtually gone. Still noticeable, but nowhere near as bad. Engine now sits about 25 mm higher than before which shows much the old mounts had deteriorated.

When I was under the car I also changed the steering damper which resulted in a huge improvement in steering feel. The old damper was, I think, the 28 year old original!

Good news Kenny My steering damper was like a bike pump when i removed mine last year, it to had been in service for 30 years .And it had no resistance in it what so ever .Going back to the vibration you still have a little you said . I put it down to electrical -bad plug - ht lead . Or even a slight vacuum leak .
