Anyone have any idea of what mods can be done to a normally aspirated M113 engine and rough costs of doing so?

A quick google suggests there are one or two things that can be done.

Decat
ECU upgrade
Exhaust headers
Performance cams
Kleeman supercharger (fitting instructions linked below for those that are interested).

Anything else worthwhile that could be put on the list?

I'm guessing the daddy of upgrades is the Kleeman Supercharger route. Has anyone any direct knowledge or experience with this conversion. The fitting instuctions make it all seem surprisingly easy for a 150bhp increase.

I suspect much of the mods for a M113 are fairly expensive.

IIRC the Kleeman charger is in the region of £9k just for the kit, decent headers are over a grand.

Modding a 119 is no better!

Here we go, its against the grain for most but a nitrous kit works well on a 500/m113 engine in my experience and its cheap and if fitted properly a safe way to gain an extra 100bhp/Same torque increase too. Use a progressive controller and a wet nitrous kit, mount the nitrous/fuel nozzle after the MAF and you'll have yourself a cheap alternative to spending loads of money. Its completely removable and you have the choice to switch it on or off when you please. HTH

What about a 5.4 M113 AMG engine swap?

Plenty of rusty E55s about for peanuts or you could probably find a good engine for under £1k. Should offer a genuine power upgrade (40/50bhp+) and a useful increase in torque.

Good proven 'bang for your buck' and a more genuine upgrade with headroom for further tuning if you so wish :thumb:

As above too, a bare engine will run you approx £4-600. The ancillaries and components from your current setup will fit the 55. :thumb:

:thumb: That should read excellent alternative! I've toyed with this idea for my E500. Never got very far with finding system supplier and installer. Reason in one word: insurance

Engine swap seems a lot of hassle for what is effectively a 10% gain.

Nitrous gives a lot more bang for the buck, but do you go for the "Fast and the Furious" one-hit wonder, or a graduated injection that works with throttle position?

Alx fitted the kleemann supercharger kit to his ML55 pretty sure it was either the only known one in the UK or at least one of very few.

There are at least four C43's that have had 55 AMG conversion on the forum, now that 210 E55's are being broken up at such a rate the engines are hardly a rare item any longer, though I think to get an engine for £400-600 is a bit doubtful, to get an engine with any sort of provenance you would still need to spend around £1000.
It's a bit more than 10% power and torque hike, more like 15% then with a remapp about 75 bhp and over 100 more torques, and with gearing from a lower capacity car makes them really very lively indeed as anyone at the Vmax day witnessed with Ollies and Jacks old car, giving a very good account of themselves, producing sub 5sec 0-60 time.

For a C43 the conversion makes sense.

An SL500 (which the OP has, and therefore the basis for my calculations) has a bit of a head start on those figures, especially in the torque stakes. It's also hauling around over 300kg more than the C43. Under those circumstances, it seems an awful lot of hassle for very little perceivable return.

A 55K lump, however, is an entirely different story :thumb:

The 500 unit bhp output in the SL appears to vary from 302 (which is what I based my intial statement on) fitted in the R230 (serves me right for using wikipedia for my info) and in the R129 there would seem to be two different 500 113 engines both with different outputs highest being 322 bhp, which engine is fitted can be identified by the second three digits of the engine number.

Spike, you should have gone for that SC last year

Not relevant to Spike, who has a 113 engine, but just for clarity, the 129 500 was originally fitted with a 119 engine, the first cars having twin distributors, the later having electronic ignition, with the highest bhp. 113s came in in '98, with lower bhp, but better mid range delivery and economy, and the same performance figures. I was chatting to Ollie about his conversion, and going from 113 to 113 (4.3 to 5.5) is okay, but 119 to 113 is a much more involved job, should anyone be thinking about it.

I had a full Kleemann setup on my ML55, same M113 N/A engine just bigger bore - s/c, cams, headers, cat-less downpipes, ECU. If you were to consider this project I would strongly recommend doing it all in Denmark. They have the tools and the knowledge of our cars and they do it all quicker and better than anybody else, thus saving you money. That of course if you have £15k+ to burn.

The other route is sourcing the parts elsewhere bit by bit and building your car say @ Ollies. You are looking at the s/c, cooling (core + wp), fuelling (can't be done effectively via ECU on older cars, has to be controlled mechanically via the regulator). There will be lots of fabrication, lots of sweat but you're looking at £5-6K, depending on the cost of parts.

My experience was the mixture of the two above, with the s/c installed by Kleemann UK franchise but with a bit of fabrication that was later fully corrected in Denmark. If I were to do it all again, I would chose the first route. It's only money (can be made) but saves you lots of time and nerves (can't regenerate).

When I was leaving Kleemann HQ last September there was a UK SLK owner coming for a full package, so I'm sure there is a few of those who's done it in the UK.

Been there, had that conversation already. No bloody chance! Most of the 119 engines in the SL were twin dizzy - it's a very narrow range that were fitted with Motronic, basically the first 2 years of facelift before switching to the 113.

A 6.0 conversion or a Rotrex s/c would be far easier, but for now mine's staying as is until I've got £10-15k to burn.

You will kill the value of your SL by messing about with the engine..

The SL500 with the M119 or M113 is pretty much perfection in terms of balance of power and reliability....
If you are keeping it forever then go for it, but no one will pay any extra for the upgrades...

When it comes to SL's, buyers like them totally standard with as many original options as possible.

Working on the basis that I'll never have £15k with nothing better to do with it...I don't think this will be a problem.

Totally standard you say? Whoops. :D

Modifactions within original specs are good, so your AMG kit, wheels etc enhance the value but superchargers and engine mods are definately negative on the cars value..

Which M113 engines had kompressors as standard then?

It sounds like I need to find one of these... £15k on the kleeman setup is a bit rich for my blood.

supercharged 55's so thats SL's, W211's, W215's etc.

But I cant see how the electronics can ever be overcome... You would need serious cash to do this one.
