Hi

Hope everyone is doing well, I need some help please.

Yesterday I realised slight smoke coming from the exhaust so when I opened the bonnet and removed the engine cover I realised oil residue around the rocker cover.

Am I right to assume that the rocker cover is leaking around the seal hence the light smoke from the exhaust and therefore I need to replace the gasket (left + right side) which is a common issue with this engine ?

I don't think it's the breathers as they were done only a couple of months ago by an MB specialist but what do you guys think?

I will be using the DIY link below which is quite detailed, are there any specialist tools I would need to complete the job e.g torque wrench as the instructions below do not list which tools I will need or if there is a torque amount when screwing/bolting the rocker in place

How to ? Change Rocker Cover gaskets and reseal breather covers on the M113/M112 engine | FotiFixes.com ? A Journal of my fixes

The DIY also shows how to do the breather but as mentioned before they have only been done a couple of months ago so can I just replace the gasket without having to do the breathers?

Here are some pictures but not sure how much it will help you guys

Any help and advice would be much appreciated thanks in advance

Leaking covers are very common...I have them.

Smoke from the exhaust is different.

Any ideas what it could be? It's very light smoke, lighter then the smoke you get from the exhaust in winter.

Could be worn or hardened valve stem O-ring seals letting oil into the combustion chambers- usually happens more on the overrun when engine vacuum draws oil into the combustion chambers?
Has the grade of oil been changed recently - is it at the correct level and not overfilled?

I topped it up 2 months ago using the recommended mobil1 oil

I checked today and on the dash and it was saying fill up 1.5 litres to reach maximum level

I know I am loosing oil somewhere because it was telling me put 1litre 2 weeks ago

Get a compression check done, to rule out worn piston rings. Also take off the intake and check the throttle body for any oil

Telling us you put oil in it 'two months ago' is not helping, we don't know what your car has been doing for 2 months.

Tell us how many MILES it is doing between top ups and what TYPE of mileage...motorway or dragstrip ?.

By the way the stuff that (normally) comes out of your exhaust on a cold winter start up is steam, not smoke.

More detailed info will give people on here more chance of helping out.

Ok I feel a bit stupid, I took it to MB and they have told me it's just because the car is running rich in fuel which is normal due to the mods, when I rev it I get no smoke from the exhaust, and they can't smell oil or anything, but I do need to do the rocker gasket, thanks everyone, heavily appreciated
