Hi, I just bought a 1996 SL500 to replace my 300SL and I am trying to work out if it's a UK car or Japan. I live in Malaysia and these are as rare as hens teeth and a LOT more expensive! The Chassis number is WDB1290672F116402 and the engine is 11997222015640

I know the M119 came in two? 5 litre variants and someone mentioned EfI (which I would guess is electronic fuel injection but there was never a carb model on the 129 yes?

Anybody know where I can look this information up or knows the answers? Much appreciated starting out on the journey :)

Yours is the older version with distributors, I believe it will also have the 4 speed gearbox.
The m119.972 is the older engine, 119.982 is the newer version.
Both good engines!

The very early versions used a the old style fuel metering head and distributor, yours has individual fuel injectors and distributors, the last ones had coil over sparkplug ignition and individual fuel injectors

Welcome to the forum.

The car is from Kenya originally according to the datacard attached in the link below. Sorry, I can't assist with any other info on the car.

Excellent thank you. That's a surprise - not sure how common SL500's were in Kenya and having travelled in Tanzania, I doubt the car ever got anywhere near maximum speed! Useful info about the engine also and paint code since I want to restore it to it's original colour at some point. Thanks again for the help - the car clearly has some history :)

There's some work there if you're looking for complete originality. Someone has fitted a load of facelift parts - the bumpers, forward Sacco panel, rear lights and hardtop are all from the later facelift model.

I am begining to wave goodbye to the originality idea :). The previous owner spent maybe £22k plus on the car - virtually the entire interior is new Mercedes original. Imported cars are subject to a 300% tax and so even 25 yrs old they are super expensive. Decent SL500's come up maybe two or three times a year across the whole country and I paid the equivalent of £25k which in the west would have bought me a pretty exceptional vehicle. This one is still excellent, I just have to accept it is what it is :). None of the mods/upgrades have harmed the car in any way other than originailty so I will drive it and love every moment anyway :).

Still a lovely looking car. I doubt anyone will notice the “upgrades”. Just enjoy the admiring looks that it will get and have fun driving it.
