just a heads up.
i was losing coolant from my ml63 a few weeks ago without any symptoms and even UV test came to nothing.
so in my case i think the problem was in the expansion bottle cap letting vapour out.
what i did was putting some teflon tape under the rubber seal on the cap, to make more it more salient.
it's been 3 weeks since with no low coolant warning.

Thank you - it's good to have the opinion from someone who know's what they're talking about (no disrespect to everybody else!) - appreciate the input
So what did your chap say Mark?

Leave well alone......so I will :)
Ha, oh right! Is that cos it would be spotted and 'treatable' [at not to big a cost] before it goes pop and needs a rebuild, or that it's a pain in the **** to do as a preventative measure?

The E9X M3 and Jag XFR [two other cars I've been looking at] also have well published issues, that could end up costing many many thousands to fix. Many M3 owners are going down the preventative route and it's easy to find a specialist who know the in and outs of the issues. Not so much for the Jag - no specialist seem to stand out as being the people to go to to have the tensioners looked at.

"If it ain't broke".........seems to be the opinion. So am going with that approach. He's aware I'm anal/careful, so likely to spot any issues before they get bad.

Blown way out for me. Enjoy these engines they are fantastic units. If god forbid it does show signs then deal with it then that's my plan of attack. My car has performed amazingly over the last year. I adore this engine. Jekel and Hyde is my way of summing it up. You have a cracking low mileage car there, enjoy it. I do mine, all the time lol.

The sound they generate is addictive, to addictive for me.

What issues have you found with the XFR? Before I bought one I did plenty of research and the two main things - gearbox and engine - were bulletproof.

I know a very very good Jag indie; whereabouts are you?

The chain tensioner mate. l’ve found it’s discussed in the same manner as the Merc headbolt issue, some saying it’s rare, others saying it’s a matter of when not if!

I live in the Midlands mate. Where is the Jag indie you know of?

Never heard of it pal!

The indie is just off the M18, really easy to get to:

I would have thought they'd learned from previous models to different tensioners? I know this was an issue on older XJ V8's as they were plastic and used to wear out, but you could upgrade them. Surely newer cars would have upgraded kit? I don't know this to be a fact, just hoping Jag would have seen sense! I had one years ago - but they had been done by a previous owner, so that wasn't a worry when I purchased.

May be the same issue? I've read that the later XFR's may of had an updated tensioners/chain etc but my budget would put me in a 2009-11 car, so is something to consider.

Here's just one thread about it - 5.0 Supercharged Chain Tensioner Recommendation - Page 1 - Jaguar - PistonHeads
