Hi Guys.

Looking at a 63 M156 car. Car seems spot on.

However last 3 services have appear to have used Fuchs Titan 5W30 as far as I understand it that’s not the correct oil for the engine.

Is this a big deal? Car is 112k miles on 2006 plate. Also worrying about other common 156 issues such as head bolts, cam lobes and so on...

Obviously I can get an oil change and get 229.5 5w40 into the car but would the car having run from 104,544 to 112,900 miles on 5w30

Since 2016 - oil has been changed 3 times so it’s fresh...

Invoice by specialist who shall not be named (for now) states Serviced to manufacture spec / schedule and they have DSB etc but in the service book it states 5w30.

Invoice does not detail it. 3 times it’s been written as 5w30...

They are a specialist oil manufacturer.

What actual Titan 5W30 , as they have further descriptions ?

Most engines can accept a two grade, 8 centiStoke range and some 30 are a fraction away from being classed as a 40 anyway .

Fuchs GT1 5w30 is all I have. It’s been in the car 3 times (based on age not miles between 104,000 to now (113,000) last changed at 111,000)

Ring the Indie / Owner and see if they can clarify for you.

I used Fuchs Titan Pro S oil in my Honda S2000 for 5 years and would probably still be using it today in my Boxster but it doesn't have the appropriate approvals.

For all oil related questions, I always used to contact OPIE Oils, under the name Oilman Si.

Still a few versions of TITAN GT1 .

Fuchs recommendeds TITAN Supersyn LONGLIFE SAE 5W-40 and has the 229.5 approval .

Don't worry too much as 229.5 isn't the most amazing oil spec in the world .

The TITAN Pro S 5W40 doesn't seek manufacturer approval as it's a niche ester racing oil and is in terms of anti wear is beyond spec , however with 8.5L to consider it gets expensive .

I've just bought a 2013 C63 (W204) with this engine, looking at the service records it was supplied with the last service used 5W-30 oil. The front page of the MB Electronic Service Sheet says it should have "SAE XW-40 (X = 0, 5, 10, 20) May Be Used". Opie Oils show a number of products in both -30 and -40 weights matching spec 229.5.

I've come from the Jaguar V8 world where the 5.0 engines are quite sensitive to oil spec and weight, is it a big deal that my C63 has 5W-30 in it instead of the recommended XW-40?

On a related note, if I want to change the oil in the interim myself can this easily be done using a vacuum pump?

There's a fairly high chance the paper says 30 but they actually used 40. To know for sure you'll have to swap it out for either 5W40 or 0W40, 229.5 spec. I used to use 5W40 so it stayed a bit thicker whilst cold to reduce drain down from the lifters.
