Hi everyone

Sorry if this has been covered before and I guess it will have been, However I have a rattle on my m156 when starting up hot after a period of being turned off. Now I thought it was timing chain tensioners but upon doing some digging on the forums I found something about the inlet camshaft adjusters causing the issue. Well today I removed my rocker cover and checked my adjusters and I could not find a fault with them only on one bank.

Couple of questions could it really be the tappets? Also what oil is everyone on as I have also found a few people on forums state Mercedes have gone from 0w40 to 5w40 for this issue. Does anyone have any proof or theory on this as im going to do a service soon and im tempted to try 5w40!

I am getting no running issues with the car but its an annoying rattle which I would like to get resolved or atleast confirm the noise is ****

5w40 shell Helix is the oil I use.
If you have the rocker cover off look at the cam lobes on the inlet cam, see if any chrome is coming off.
How old and what is the milage?

Zenman63 its funny you mentioned that oil as I have just ordered some from car parts for less 10l about £48 ish, I will order my genuine oil filter and replace that this weekend coming.

As for the camshaft lobes they all looked ok, I did take some pictures actually ill have a look at them again. The car in question is on 52k miles and is a 2011 face lift.
