I have a the M178 engine with the same turbos, uprated cooling and dry sump as the GTR. Is there anyone on here with tuning ideas, especially anyone that has a GTC or GTR they have modified?

Currently I have a set of 200 cell downpipes with the GPF delete ready for installation. The cat 6 versions are about £1600 which I thought was reasonable considering the build quality and heat protection. There is a cheaper one at £1350 but it is cat 5 and not guaranteed to pass the emissions test.

The two most often recommended remappers of Mercedes AMG's are MSL Performance in Birmingham and GAD in Essex. Both have their fans and you'd be safe leaving the car in their hands.
I've read too many negative comments about DMS in Southampton to recommend them.

Hopefully I will be off to speak with GAD in a few weeks time. Sounds like a great company and one of their owners has been driving a tuned GTS for 3 years.

from what I've read these newer m17x engines ideally need a CPC for proper stage2. I'm honestly not sure if this applies to m178 and how different it is from m177 (I doubt it's that different ECU wise It's just wet/dry sump difference?) I do know that on m177 (w213 e63s) CPC tune is the best route to go and unlocks much better adjustment and fine tuning resulting in a much better performance on same hardware. There are off the shelf ones as well as custom as far as i know

When you say a CPU tune are you meaning if the tuner is making alterations to the program loaded onto the ecu as opposed to a tuning box?

Mind you I am no expert, but as far as I know newer Mercs have ECU and CPC, CPC is ComputerPowertrainControl. Basically CPC controls a bunch of things which are crucial for ECU and cooking that big powaaaa.
the issue is even if you modify ECU CPC can intervene, limiting torque or hp or sending messages to ECU to cut power or lower it, so it becomes a bottleneck of sorts.
Depending on a company some say Stage2 + requires CPC, some say you can't get a true Stage 2 without CPC.

But what is Stage anyways?

I guess if you want the full potential of hardware opened up you need ECU and CPC tune.

Here is a snippet from xStages tuner explaining it:
CPC NG Module acts as an ECU, think of it as a smaller ECU that controls many parameters that were used to be within the ECU in earlier platforms.

CPC takes control over the ECU by managing many parameters:
- Torque Limits
- Speed Limit
- Exhaust Flaps
- Intercooler Pump
- Thermostat Control
- Pedal and Throttle Response
- Fan Control
- Power Distribution
.. and much more !

Its like an ECU tune that depends on how the tuner approach the tune and software calibration, so each tune provides different outcomes.

I believe there are OTS solutions as well as custom ones

Antony at GAD is the person to speak to about tuning the GT. He has one and has probably tuned more than anyone else in the UK.

Would a 2018 have the same CPU tuning issues.
I intend to get the downpipes fitted and in the Summer an Eventuri intake. After that a custom tune to match.
First thing was replacing the injectors and next is getting the solenoid mod done which I’m sure would help any mods regarding reliability.

It's not an issue as such, just a limitation imho and I believe any new Mercs that came with 9G trans now come with that CPC module

Hopefully it won't be an issue for me because I have the 7spd DCT before the newer model came out.

see I didn't even know they came with 7 speeds still!
I think you should be fine then
Mine is a 2018 so maybe all the new ones don't. The DCT in the GTC is the same as the 7 speed in some of the Aston Martins and Ferraris like the 488 and F8.

I found this on YouTube that explains the difference between the M177 and M178 in detail.
