I heard rumour of roadworks/delays where the M25 joins the M1, and/or on the start of the M1. Is there any truth in this? Any info much appreciated.

I think they were doing roadworks there a while back.

Not sure if they still are. There's also some average speed limit slightly further up on that section with the roadworks, can't remember exactly where from/to but between the M25 juction and Luton sort of way.

It's bound to be busy during rush hour I would expect - always leave early or late if you can help it! ;)

The M1 between the M25 and Luton has always been a nightmare. They were widening it recently, so add roadworks to the normal congestion. I avoid it if at all possible and use the A1(M) instead.

Yes - those roadworks started in 2007 - and due to complete by Dec 2008.

There is an avareage speed limit of 50mph enfornced by average speed cameras, and the roadworks run from M1 Junc 6 through to M1 Junc 11.

Its basically a lane widening exercise that involved moved some bridges etc as well.

During rush there will be delays in the morning heading towards London and in the evening heading out - make sure you stock up with enough fuel and nibbles...

"The cost of widening the M1, Britain's biggest road-building project, is spiralling out of control with each mile costing more than £21m.
The National Audit Office was called on last night to investigate why the price of the project has risen from £3.7bn to £5.1bn"

That's £3977 per foot...

Thanks chaps. Coming from M25 junc 9-Was thinking of coming off the M25 at junc 16, then joining the A43 and then get on the M1 at junc 15a and then onwards oop norf

I would say that when I go through even at rush hour it is not too bad, unless there is a breakdown. Local roads so congested can be caught up on the avoiding route.

We did the M1/M25 when taking my daughter back to uni in Guildford recently. Southbound was a nightmare!!! Utter Nightmare. Delays around the roadworks . Weight of traffic - not the speed restrictions either! Easily added 40 mins to the journey/ Also some of the signposting in places is atrocious so watch for that on the return. Northbound however not a problem at all, sailed through.

This was on a Saturday at the beginning of September.
