When the gantry indicates a new lower limit of say 50mph, do the cameras on the gantry know this new limit or are they pre-set to 70mph+

Marc

They adjust with the speed indicated, however there is some debate as to whether they are being used legally as
A; They only have type approval for single use and they're ganged in fours accross the lanes, and
B; the camera doesn't take a picture of the limit sign so it could be argued that the camera was out of synch with the sign.

They reduce to the speed limit after 1 minute of the signs going up / changing.
I got done for doing 56 in my lorry when the signs said 40.
However, this was at 2am and nothing else about apart from a drain cleaner.

When I got my ticket through the post, I asked for the picture.
They sent me it and it had a nice clear picture of the back of my trailer and in the bottom left hand corner was a 40mph sign in a circle, but in red.
It was not 'the' road sign, but think they have a way of 'super imposing' it on there at the time the bugger flashes.

The tolerance with which you are allowed to speed is also less when a variable limit is up, than if the sign is not lit and the limit is 70mph.

No excuse Graem. These bl**dy lorry drivers try and get away with murder. :D :D

Yes but as it isn't actually a picture of the sign that you the driver sees, how can it be guarenteed that the limit was in force and visible.

These camera fines have been contested and the CPS has dropped the case just before the hearing.
check Speed trap Bible.

I hope not....I was simply going with the flow so to speak.albeit the faster flow if there is such a thing on the M25. I do rely on Roadangle a fair bit though!

Also, do they really flash? In all my time on M25 I have never seen a camera actaully flash (at me or anyone else for that matter).

I have 3 points to prove they do

Yes, they do flash, have seen it on t'other side of carriageway.

I'm surprised that SPECS cameras have not been put in place instead of the old GATSO, that would really slow cars down, and makes more sense in such a "variable limit" area. Not that I condone cameras ;)

I do, however, have a Snooper S4; just to be sure. Not totally 100% reliable though. Has trouble 'keeping up' with all the cameras on the M25 variable

I have certainly seen them flash on the section between J12 (M3) and Junction 14 near Heathrow and also know people that have been booked by them.

The surprising thing is how quickly the speed limits can change, I've previously aproached with no limit displayed on the gantry at say 2 or 3 am, then suddenly 'absurd limits' are displayed such as 20 in the nearside lane, 40 in the middle and 50 in the outside, with no sign of anything or anyone else around. I assume that either:

a. they're testing the signs?
b. someone is having a laugh on the CCTV cameras?

No I wasn't pi**ed and hadn't taken anything! Anyone else seen odd ones like this?

Sure you hadn't taken anything... Now, where did you buy that stuff,it seems pretty strong, I might be interested too :P

On a serious note, they do test the signs at odd hours. More than the signs, they test the cameras at odd hours (sometimes bringing the speed down to 10mph!!!)
Needless to say, during a testing, any flashed you get shouldn't be a worry

The whole section between the M40 and A3 is a pain, the roadworks section around Heathrow particularly vile. Whilst you are lucky to be doing 40 at some points in the day the limit is applied 24 hrs and many a time I have seen the unwary flashed.

Regular users just trundle along.

/me will have to remember to pay attention. I can't recall seeing any cameras on the M25, but I don't go round the heathrow part of it at all. Just M1 round to Kent.

There are no cameras on that section, only on the bottom side between J9 and J15.
However, they have just put some Gatso's by J27 (M11), but are covered up at the moment.

The M11 roadworks are driving me bonkers. There must be 30 cameras within a few square miles at the moment.

When do you think this happened? Only, I went through some about three weeks ago around the M4 junction and I was well over.... heard nothing and its too late for them now I think

Guess what.! they are about to introduce this on the M42 around NEC. All markings are down, all gantry's are up. For those of you around the Mids area or coming to the NEC. not on yet.. will let you know when they are.
