Hello,

i am looking to try and save my 2004 C180k from the scrap yard and attempt a timing chain replacement.

I was hoping that there may be a club member who has done this before and thus has the special tools to complete the job (camshaft alignment/locking and riveting tool kit) - and is either looking to sell the tools on or possibly allow me to hire them.

I am based in Yorkshire.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

will do - just trying to work out whether to do the job or scrap the car. I dont want to strip the lower timing cover to do the full job and am nervous about replacing the chain, tensioner, adjusters etc, only to find that it is that one chain guide located in the lower housing which is the issue!

I hear you , lets face it a 2004 w203 will most probably have other issues (I know my 2006 one does) rust springs to mind and I can understand your reluctance is throwing too much money at it . By and large they are pretty good and spare parts can be had cheaply , some rust more than others and only you can decide how much money you want to spend on it.

Fortunately for me the engine in mine (M113 5.4 V8) is the least of my worries.

I think MPG would feature quite highly on my list of worries if that was my car but that probably just shouts that I can't afford one! 😁

Fuel cost and VED cost when owning a 17 year old V8 take some really creative 'man maths' to justify ownership . But it's nice to drive something fairly rare and is close to the bottom of it's depreciation curve.

True. Factor in depreciation and many people are riding around in Mercedes V8's.... Only they're not 🙂

One of the reasons not many people are not riding around in C55 AMG estates is because less than 60 were ever registered in the UK .

One other reason is that you can get the same performance from a less thirsty easier to look after modern car ....but not the V8 'bit' thats hard to quantify unless you have driven it for a while.
