c280
OK so I have just bought an 06 c280. Yes I should have done a bit of research about the model before buying it!

So the engine management light came on shortly after I bought it and I took it in for a diagnostic - they told me that it pointed to the "idler shaft" and that it would cost thousands to repair and they didn't have the facility to do so - essentially meaning it's a write off as the car isn't really worth spending thousand on.

I then had a look through this forum and saw that it could also be the magnets; I got this confirmed by a MB specialist who said bring it in and he will make sure it's not just the magnets which is a much easier problem to rectify.

My VIN is: WDC2030542R235940

Can I find out if it's in the affected range with the VIN?

I can't find the engine number (if someone could point me in the right direction with this it'd be great) and haven't got the V40 back yet.

This is the first MB I bought. I kind of expected a German car with 60k on the clock to be pretty solid!

Seems when they aren't slowly gassing their customers to death with rigged emissions tests, they're ripping them off. Doesn't seem like much has changed since my Granddads day. :D

Did you buy it from a dealer or trader (please say yes.......)

engine no:-272940 30 352197 so looks like yours could be the one with balance shaft issues, as above please say this was bought from a trader.

hi guys, thanks for getting back to me on this so quickly.

OK that is sad news indeed.

I could stretch to £1500 but I spoke to MB in Edinburgh and the independent I'm taking it to for the proper check and both said 2-3k! Is there anyone on here who does it for nearer the £1500?

I bought it from a trader, I've already chewed his ear off but as ever it's going to be a whole lot of stress getting any money back.

The fact that I'm up in Scotland and he's down in London doesn't help matters too much.

If its a worn balance shaft gear then its not fit for purpose, concentrate on getting your money back

yep, I'm going to focus on trying to get a refund for it. Obviously whoever traded it in did so for a reason -more likely than not the balance shaft.

Thanks for the advice I'll update the thread moving forward in case anyone's interested.
