Yesterday diesel at £1.15 litre and free coffee if you spend over £40.

The local Asda at junction 2 was £1.14.

I queried why the price was so low as they are normally 15p a litre more than Asda. “Need to get the customers back in they said”.
So I filled up and had a coffee.

Hopefully a few more motorway services will follow suit and drop their prices to something reasonable. At the moment they are like D1ck Turpin.
I'll avoid them if at all possible unless I'm desperate.

I'd avoid them even more so after this really, blatantly admitting their overpricing strategy has failed so now belatedly trying to compete. Had they used competitive pricing from the outset and not tried to monopolise, they would have still had a steady customer base but, as pointed out above, they are treated with contempt by most people due to their over-charging for years.

Filled up at Morrisons this morning. 109.9p
But not the cheapest locally apparently .... Screenshot_20200911-182909_Chrome.jpg

In the last three years I have used motorway services for fuel just 3 times.

As the absolute last resort - and only for around £7 to £10 to get me to the next convenient regular filling station or supermarket or to complete my my journey. And it's only if I either have a car with very poor range - or if I've been caught out not being able to fill elsewhere or with higher than expected consuption or a fuel gauge and range that flips from being optimistic to pessimistic as the tank empties (hello Mercedes A180d :( ).

I’ve also been pleasantly surprised at the low cost of fuel at services recently. For example Donnington Services BP had a sign saying they were ‘price matching’ local stations and they were the cheapest.

I avoid it too. In the UK I think I’ve only ever bought fuel at a motorway service station twice in 27 years - it’s rare that a motorway journey in the UK is long enough to need to refuel part way (having filled up beforehand). Towing a caravan from Aberdeen to Cornwall may require a fuel stop though!

However when I’m travelling in Europe I refuel at service stations - as motorway journeys are usually much, much longer than the fuel range will allow, and the convenience of not having to worry about whether the petrol station will be open or delay the journey makes it worth the cost premium.
