I have a W208 CLK cabrio and when I bought it a couple of months back I discovered that the main beam did not come on when the combination switch was pushed forward - though they would come on pulling it back to the 'flash' position. The supplying garage got a new combination switch from the nearest MB stealership and fitted it - and all was well ... for a while. But driving home from work yesterday the main beam suddenly stopped working - exactly the same symptoms as last time! I find it difficult to believe that the new switch has failed exactly the same way so quickly - has anyone any suggestions about what could be causing this problem? Is it possible that a relay somewhere may be faulty rather than the combination switch? (The car has Xenon dipped beams by the way but only regular H7 bulbs in the main beams.)

Are you sure your car would have high beams if the main light switch was not turned fully to the right?

At least the W211 can be coded either to allow main beams at auto-lights (or DRL) or only when lights have been switched on from the light switch. For the other one you may have all the other lights but main beams would not come on before switching lights on from the main switch.

Min Beam Lost (Again)

Hi Diesel,
Thanks for the suggestion, it's a good thought but sadly I don't have auto headlamps on my CLK (odd because it has every other option ticked, I wonder if theses were available as an option on a 2000 CLK?).

I'm still wondering if there is a headlamp circuit relay of any sort involved - does anyone know if W208 CLK's have headlamp relays?

Update on Main Beam Problem

Took the car into the supplying dealer (sports car specialist, not stealership) and excellent mechanic quickly diagnosed this as a faulty light switch (main light switch, not stalk). They are going to replace it (under warranty) which is good, but has anyone else ever had a similar problem? They also still have to fix the headlamp washers which apparently need some sort of new control unit ... I'm beginning to worry that the electrics on these cars seem generally a bit dodgy! Anyone got an opinion on this?
