Does anyone know where I could buy a mains operated tyre pump from please.

I have purchased two 240 volt adapters that allegedly allow the cigar lighter socket to plug in, but both have been useless. Now I want a straight forward cheap tyre pump that plugs straight into a 'hole in the wall'

How do you mean useless?.There are some converter devices that plug into your 12v socket and give you 240v mains. thats how i power my in car printer and laptop. A mains op tyre pump is no use if you have a flat on the M62 now is it?

I use the second one that dieselman pointed out... you plug it into mains, let the compressor build up and then you can disconnect it and wheel it wherever and it contains enough pressure to do a few tyres...

When I read the title I thought yeah that would be useful too. Then immediately thought an adapter such as the two Glojo has tried and found useless would be even better (for me).

Glojo, so I can avoid them, what produts did you find poor and why?

Do share if you find a suitable mains powered device, I tend to do my pressure adjustments in the vacinity of my garage and having to use the cigar. lighter is not ideal for me (sat nav screen obscures).

I have no idea what your point is, but I don't want to plug anything into a 12 volt socket and get 240 volts.

I must confess that second one does look very good, but it might be too big for 'the boss' to use? The third example although perhaps not quite as good, might be the ideal option.

Thanks very much indeed for the excellent links. We have tried the rechargeable option before :o and ruled that option out.

The first brand is made by Sunpower, the second is out in the observatory which we use to power the telescope, but I don't have the brand to hand. Through experience I have found the amp powerage on the compressor to be very sensitive (or whatever the technical term is).

These adaptors are no doubt excellent for what they are designed for, but when connected to a tyre pump they fail miserably. I am NOT criticising the adaptors, the ones I have purchased are simply not suited
for the task I want.

I had one of the little tankless compressors and found it very good. They are a bit noisier due to having a compressor that can provide more air but are otherwise excellent.

It's my pleasure....Erm, I thought it's what we were here for.;)

I bought the Air Monster from Argos, its a mains chargeable/battery powered and 12v. One charge will blow up I think its 8 tyres from flat, before it needs recharging.

There are two reasons they are not suitable, one is because they create a square wave as output, hence the compressor might not be happy. the second is the electrical load of the compressor motor might be too great for the inverter and burn it out or cause the voltage to drop.

Just a few notes on the subject of both.

Compressors , It depends what you want to do with it,pressure is one thing, volume is the other, though a small compressor may be able to blow up to say 150lbs it depends what you are are going to drive, an air sander will take 4 cubic ft a min where as a nail gun will run on 1cfm. to get a 12" fan on a spray gun with a 30-35 air cap, that will need 3cfm. If the compressor cant supply the volume it just fizzles out after a couple of mins

For mains powered from 12 volts the UPS computer back up power supplies are perfect, I get them free and sell to people in caravans etc, got a clean sine wave output and they come in sizes from 100w up to 1kw

I am sorry then for suggesting that .I did not know you did not want to do that.
I was just saying i do that but it is your choice if you do not.

:) Your wish is my command.

I opted for Dieselmans recommendation of a small compressor which came with a free tyre inflator, plus a spray gun.

I also bought one of these which someone had only used once and put back onto Ebay?? Prior to this as previously statedI had bought a couple of different branded examples and both were useless, they were simply not man enough to operate the 12v tyre pump. This model however does what it says on the packet. Well pleased with it.

If I can be of any further assistance just shout.

I'll be getting one of the WAECO MOBITRONIC 240V to 12V TRANSFORMERs on the basis of that recommendation John, thank you.

Fingers crossed:o :o My son has just used ours to pump up the tyres on the garden aerator and it worked perfectly. It was that deed that reminded me of your query. Many apologies for not responding earlier.

Yours sincerely

Purchased last night, so early in the week I should hopefully find out :bannana:

I can concur the Waeco Mobitronic 240V to 12V rectifier seems to do what it says on the box.

Designed for running caravan refrigeration units from mains power it vigorously powers both my type inflator and car vacuum.
