One thing I am noticing though is that the newer cars are not as DIY friendly as they used to be in the past. For instance, you have to have the right diagnostic tool (not necessarily the Star diagnosis) in order to read but then also to remove error codes.

Yes I'll have to get a code reader. To show how far back in the dark ages I am the last time I read a diagnostic code was in the days before ODBC when you shorted two connections to put the thing in diagnostic mode and then read a stream of codes by counting the number of pulses with an old AVO voltmeter. It worked though and identified a failed throttle pot.
 
I am even worse. I am from the time when using a bulb for ignition timing adjustments...

I noticed this: icaraoft 980 reader. It seems like a decent unit, capable to communicate and read many different systems. As I understand it can read and erase error codes, the only thing it cannot do is adaptations although it claims to be capable of...
