May be a silly question

There are lots of differences, but basically the CL is a massive coupé based on the s-class limousine and the CLK is a mid-sized coupé now using the e-class platform I believe. The "K" in CLK stands for Kurz, meaning "short".

I thought it used the C class platform, did a quick search and found (for the new CLK):

The CLK shares its platform (and wheelbase) with the rest of the C-Class, yet longer front and rear overhangs make it the lengthiest of the lot (estate included). It's the same height as the saloon and estate, but the added length gives the impression of a lower stance - an optional sport suspension pack can be had that does actually lower it by 15mm.

The W208 CLK did use the W202 C as a platform. I'm not sure about the latest CLK.

Exactly Steve. I thought they used the w211 chassis for the w209 CLK, they needed the new CLK to be bigger than the last, so it sets it further apart from the w203 based sportcoupé.

EDIT: I just checked MBSpy and he also says the w209 is based on the w203 so maybe it is :)

The new CLK was launched before the W211.

There's another belief shattered ... I always thought it meant "Kompakt", meaning ... er ... Compact :p .

The chassis for the w211 was designed about 3 years before it was launched though, so it could still have been used I'm sure :) .

Yeah well, "SL" stands for "Superlicht" (super light) which doesn't really work any more does it? :)

Reading 'Mercedes Enthusiast' today,(first and last time), I spotted a car with 'E000' on the boot. What does that mean then?

I've seen a W203 C000 on the road too!

Yes the W209 CLK is based on the W203 C Class, and shares much of the interior but hardly any exterior panels. It's really the equivalent of the 3 series coupe compared to the saloon. The C Coupe is a shortened version of the W203 built to compete with the 3 series compact, both of which should have been shot at birth! :D

Cheers
Andy
