May have acted in haste

Members seem to think that paying £30 p.a. has bought them membership in some exclusive Gentlemen's club where they can avoid MB hoi polloi as found here, .

Where do we pay...

You are entitled to your opinion, but most of us who areMercedes-Benz-Club members disagree. This is a great forum for the general public, the official one is for paying members everyone has a choice, remember we all enjoy the same cars.
No members of the offical club would belittle or slag off this site they way that you do the club, maybe you have your own agenda.
I notice that you post there when you are trying to flog something....my last word on it.
David sorry to run your post off topic

The official club website is full of posts slagging off free forums, including this one. Topic: Mercedes Owners Assn, the 171 post thread slagging off that club is a rather stand out example.

I can be hired to lend social gloss to any car occasion (Southend excepted) for a modest fee..

Surely your exclusion list runs a little wider than Southend ? :D

It's worth noting there's a difference between the Mercedes-Benz Owners Club (MBO) and The Mercedes-Benz Club. The former has a free forum as mentioned; the latter is the officially-recognized club: membership gets you a Stuttgart-issued club card and access to WIS and EPC, as well as the club Gazette and the MB Classic magazine. Its forums are password-protected.

Just to clarify further :

The 'MBO' lot are not permitted to call themselves The Mercedes-Benz Owners Club as that is the name of the 'official' club , normally shortened to 'The Mercedes-Benz Club' .

Hence you have

The Mercedes-Benz Owners Club , shortened to The Mercedes Benz Club with the website The Mercedes-Benz Club

The other organisation is

The Mercedes-Benz Owners Association , or just MBO ( as you will see at the top of their website ) mercedesclub.org Despite the name of the website , they are not allowed to call themselves the club due to the name already being taken - hence the 'association' .

The MBOA , as already explained , came about after Owen Newman publishing lost the contract to produce The Mercedes-Benz Club Gazette and started producing their own publication the 'Mercedes Buyer' which was an advertising publication with mainly cars for sale and some commercial advertising but very little editorial content . This was distributed to the Mercedes-Benz Club's membership list without the permission of the club , and also tried to poach advertising from companies who were already taking advertising in the Gazette . When advertisers realised that both publications were being circulated to virtually the same readership ( ONP would only have the members list as of the time they parted company with the club , so no updates ) so some advertisers pulled out of one publication or the other .

ONP then started up the MBOA to try to help the sale of their publications and there has been 'friction' between the two organisations ever since .

One is a club run by and for the benefit of its members ; the other is an organisation run by a commercial publishing company to increase the profitability of its publications .

Incidentally , taken from the homepage of the MBO website

"This website is not in any way connected or affiliated with the Daimler Chrysler Group. The Mercedes Benz Owners is a completely independent organisation. Any information displayed on this website has not been approved by the Daimler Chrysler Group and the products or services we sell or advertise via this website have not been endorsed by the Daimler Chrysler Group. The Daimler Chrysler Group are the proprietors of the Community Trademarks "Mercedes", "Mercedes Benz" and the three pointed star logo."

Don't they realise Daimler Chrysler no longer exist and that the parent company of Mercedes-Benz has been Daimler AG for some time ?

Seems as though i caused a little unrest - not to worry . This is my fav forum at this early stage Cant be definitive as yet but probably will be as time passes .

Guys, keep it nice or it'll have to be closed this thread?

Have I missed something here? :dk:

A bit harsh, Neil! I've only skimmed through the thread, which was started in Jan, 2010, btw, by someone who received an unsolicited email from them (MBO) as part of a susbcription recruitment campaign. There is then some confusion about data protection with clarifications, etc, and so it goes on. An expelled member had set up camp over there, with talk of non members attending a Club day, various criticisms being written about the official Club and defended and reported back etc, and I believe it made it over here as well. The thread is then resurrected over time as relevant info is posted elsewhere, just like here.

Of the posts you mention, very few slag them off, but the converstions do (and are allowed to) harmlessly meander, but always revert back, and I found this post (one of the 171) quite educational!:-

"I used to work on those Austin Champ things as a vehicle electrician. Absolute nightmare with a 24v DC system for the vehicle signals equipment. and a dynamo with a planetary gearbox in it that was capable of producing 240v AC. And as you say they were waterproofed which meant any job took 10 times as long as on anything else because it had to stay waterproof. Needless to say most of the work I did was repairing the damage caused by some squaddie taking it to bits for a field repair and not getting it back together properly.....
...That's what you get when you allow a committee to design something. "

So it's not all bad!

David Bird, No feathers ruffled. Mainly good spirited back and forth stuff. You pays your money and takes your pick.

Fantastic 124 Day organised by the The Official Mercedes-Benz Club last year at Gaydon. Met loads of people off this very forum and we had a good old chinwag. 124s as far as the eye could see. Magic.

You pays your money and takes your pick.

David

Don't worry. From what I've seen on here everyone is "normal" and wlll take comments or remarks without getting into a hissy fit!!!!

They may question them but usually nicely.

The muppets who very occasionally post exposé themselves.

As regard silly questions. No such thing. Funny one about the foot brake incident. Chuckle. Think we have all been there!

David , no problems at all , and apologies from me if I took your thread slightly off topic - although it did start as a discussion on confusion between different clubs/organisations/forums and the merits of each .

Many of us are members of more than one of these things and are quite happy to juggle our time between each of them .

I'm afraid that when I hear of any of them being 'slagged off' unfairly , I do tend to leap to the defence of the underdog .

Wherever you settle , I hope you make new friends .

The point would have been lost in the volume of pages..
