MB A160 - Gear Box Clunk

My 1999 MB A160 Automatic has com to a sudden halt in the south of Sydney today (I live in the north of Sydney!). We were stopped at an intersection and as we pulled away there was a "clunk" from the LHS front wheel and we ceased to move. Putting it into D or R failed to move the vehicle and subsequently moving to P yielded a short series of clicks as something that was turning slowed down to a stop.

I am returning tomorrow with a car carrying trailer to bring it home: Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I am hoping that it is just a buggered CV joint - is this possible?

That sounds very likely given the clunk from one side and the gearbox output shaft still turning when you tried to engage park.
