Out and about this lunchtime I saw a (metallic blue) VW R32 on the road for the first time.

We had a friendly joust on a quiet bit of road; he was ahead of me waiting to pass someone when I caught up.

We both passed the slower car and enjoyed a few minutes of fun on a B road with good visibility - mostly bends and just a few corners.

The R 32 is FAST, and as you follow it round bends it looks like its on rails. I had a couple of chances to pass him, (bottled it) at times when the road was clear, but we were both accelerating hard - I had to lift off a couple of times (as he changed gear) and that's when I could have pulled out - but I'd have been heading towards the next bend way too fast if I'd risked it.

Having to outbrake someone I don't know into a corner is not where I wanted to be... so I never did get past.

Good fun, no other traffic, and ended with an acknowledgement as we went our different ways.

I came home and looked up the R32, and in terms of value for money, at half the price of a C32 it's an absolute cracker, and is available with new DSG gearbox too!

Its still a VW Golf though, and for that reason I wouldn't buy one! They do look good though with the twin exhaust.

Pity you didn't finish with a stretch of Dual-Carriageway M8, then you could have shown him the real value of your C32 AMG.:D :D

I followed a car the other day, left me for dead at the lights. I thought "Cheeky" and went after him, caught him at next lights.

Saw the Four exhaust pipes then the badge-----------Maserati. oh well.

I keep seeing a blue one here in Maidenhead, very nice looking.
I have the broucher and price list for one right here with me! :D

Golf? or Maserati Maff?

No it's the Golf!

I like Steve_BCS's comment about the Masser he owned; 'Money Pit'.

dribble dribble...... same as the one i keep seeing. Notice there's not a Golf badge anywhere insight, inside or out, just 'R32' which is how VW want it to be known!

Yes alright then M8.;)

By the way they don't look that fast on paper do they.

The most powerful Golf ever is coming to America: Its name: R32. Its output: 177 kW / 241 hp: Its engine: An extremely agile 3.2 liter V6 - which is also installed in the new Phaeton. This compact four-wheel drive sports car from Volkswagen accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds and allows a top speed of 247 km/h (153 mph) wherever this is permitted. However, this value only reveals one of the Golf R32's dynamic sides. The manner in which this sports car exhibits a high level of agility, superiority and safety in all speed ranges and in all conceivable situations is equally as fascinating.

Even I would take that on eh?
:bannana: :bannana:

After I had a load of crappy unreliable cars, ending with a TR6 (red - looked exactly like the one on Top Gear, but never went for even as long as the Top Gear feature, especially in the rain) I bought a black VW Scirocco MkI which never missed a beat.

It was the first truly reliable car I ever owned, so it was followed by - 2 more, then a Scirocco GTi, Golf Gti (several), Jetta Gti, and finally a 16v Golf. All tough reliable cars.

So me and VWs go back a long way. I confess I love the Mercs, but I wonder if I would ever have moved to Merc without my time with VW - I always used to try and buy British until it became like shooting your own foot off... :)

I must agree , if I'm honest that I also have a sneaky regard for VW engineering.

Although I have never owned one.

My parents bought a brand new Passat at the end of 2001, its broken down twice and has been off the road at one point for over a month waiting for VW to get a part in, even now its only done about 10K miles. Last time it broke down was last bank holiday at the end of May leaving them and my Gran stranded in North Wales on the bank holiday monday. VW charged them £150 to come out even though it was still under warranty. They won't ever be buying another VW again!

My previous car was a J-reg VW Golf 1.4. 0-60 in a week, but never broke down in the 3 years I owned it - unlike another car I can think of <grrr>.

"If only everything was reliable" certainly held true for me.

I bought a mk4 golf for my dad, thought it ran a bit rough when i bought it, after having it serviced, they said the it had breathing problems, ended up changing the whole engine management system!, luckily it had 1 mnths warrenty left! i must admit, the service department at VW was great, best service ive recieved from any stealership!

Dunno, never liked the MK4 Golf, bit lardy and overweight but still trying to keep up in the 21st century.

Bit like an automotive Peter Stringfellow really.

Coming from a VW mad family, it was inevitable that I would follow. After a brief dally with an Escort (first car), I stayed true to VAG until the CLK.

Audi Coupe 2.2i (gorgeous car, loved it, although a dodgy 3rd gear synchromesh meant you had to wait about three seconds between 2nd and 3rd gear, which made overtaking on country roads interesting :D ), Golf GTi 16v, Corrado VR6, Corrado VR6 Storm. All class cars. (Wish I still had has the Storm :( ).

And I confess; I did consider the R32, as a replacement for the CLK, but couldn't bear to part with it :p . Maybe if I have anymore £550 servicing bills like last week ...

Cheers

Andrew
