We all love our MB - perhaps love might be a bit OTT but you get my gist.
I proudly showed my newly purchased MB to a mate of mine the other day and I instantly knew that ‘things’ were going down hill when he described it as a posh Fiesta. FFS a posh Fiesta, that really did pi55 on my strawberries. Needless to say he won’t be going for a spin in it anytime soon.
My neighbours saw me washing it the other day but none of them came across to talk to me. I couldn’t give a s5it to be honest but what it did tell me in both instances is that people were jealous of my recent purchase. No idea why it effects people in that way. I’m certainly not the jealous type and I’ve always tried to show a positive interest in whatever my mates / neighbours purchase but never jealousy.
It’s only an A45 FFS. It’s clearly not a Ferrari Senna or whatever expensive motor you can think of. I suppose what I’m getting at is does anybody else experience jealousy simply because they drive a MB and what is the worst ‘compliment’ you have received.
PS. I should say there is nothing wrong with Fieatas as I use to own one in my youth.

I haven't experienced anyone feeling jealous toward my car choice before, to my knowledge , but sure it does happen.
Take it as a backhanded complement if you get any negative comments. I know I would:D

I’d be more annoyed if my neighbours came to talk to me while I was busy washing my car tbh.

Can’t say I’ve experienced this, IMO unless you have an S class nothing is posh

The 204 c63 saloons look like a mondeo ST, coupes look like an Astra coupe. Similar in newer models. The A45 is just a tarted up fiesta with a premium

We’re paying for the badge, boys and girls

Not noticed it with any of my MBs, but a few years ago I pulled up in my drive in a Ferrari and a fellow petrol head Mercedes owning neighbour walked over. He just said “ You bastard” and walked away! It was all in jest and he soon popped back for a proper gander - he knew that I regularly borrowed such cars from work. He did admit to being jealous - of my job.

I like the dichotomy of having 3 shitty old Mercs on the drive of quite a premium address, all 4 paid for.

Alot of lads at work commented when i sold my cls and bought a ford kuga. After 2 months i passed on the kuga to the mrs and got myself a c250 . I was met with silence from all but a few. That star badge certainly brings out the green in peoples eyes.

Many years ago, a Mercedes driver driving aggressively in Germany would be shouted at "Mercedes-fahrer!" accompanied by a rude gesture. See also this article in Bild magazine regarding the perceived personalities of drivers of various marques in Germany:

Automarken und ihr Image - Mercedes-Fahrer: arrogante, unsportliche Spießer?

As for envy? I have a C-Class. My neighbours are stil split on wherher I am an Uber driver who upgraded from a Prius, or an Uber VIP driver that can't afford an E-Class.

Nothing is posh these days, my car wash guy pulls up in a Ferrari, sometimes a 911 or a classic E-type whichever his friend has thrown him the keys for that day to keep the batteries charged.

Does make me chuckle what the neighbours must think, poshest car washer around? Lol[IMG]

I don't think your neighbours really care one way or the other. These days, every Tom, **** & Harry has a Mercedes either purchased 2nd hand from the glut of used vehicles around or new on a PCP.

I wouldn't worry about it - if you like the car, that's all that matters.

I can understand (to some extent) where these comments come from though. The problem for 'prestige' marques these days is that ordinary cars are just so damn good that it's hard to justify the additional cost of something like an MB.

In ye olden times when I were a lad, the difference in quality, performance etc. between a repmobile (e.g. Ford Escort) and a posh car (e.g. Jaguar XJ6) was huge. These days, all cars are reliable, comfy etc. SWMBO has a Fiesta Zetec and it's a brilliant little thing to drive.

TBH, I never really viewed my E-Class (W211's) as anything particularly special (maybe 10% better than a Mondeo / Insignia) but basically just a posh Airport Taxi.

That said, I'm an old git now though and don't have the same interest in cars as I once did. One of my mates rolled up in his new BMW i8 recently and I wasn't interested having a run in it. There was no jealousy involved, simply that I can scarcely control my indifference to electric cars. Had he appeared with his Bullitt Mustang or V8 SL, that would have been a different story......

Never experienced any jealousy in my 13 year old S211, strangely. 2 people have referred to it as a hearse but unsure if that's the black estate car look or the speed I drive. :p

Can't say I've had any negative experiences of jealousy or comments along them lines.

It's when negative comments are made on a certain vehicle/brand type or particular engine that makes me realize how shallow folk are.

More so on our very own MB vehicles with folk on this actual forum!!!!

Nowt posh about the SL but I doubt every Tom **** or Harry has their car washer turning up in Ferrari or Porche to wash the Merc, I suspect that looks a little odd!

I was actually responding to the OP :) - (I should have quoted him:oops:).

Your neighbours probably think you are paying the car wash guy too much money!

    Even the dustcart is merc!

If you want a RWD car with a decent sized engine you haven't got much choice. I don't think I trust another BMW, even worse money pits.

Most of our 22-25 year old electricians are driving about in leased/PCP A Classes. All living at home and wearing Rolex watches bought on a 3 year plan!!
