I have just seen Simon M's new photo's in the gallery - amazing (car and pics). Anyone, or maybe the man himself, can tell us how he got that effect? is it a lense, a camera feature, or software? Thanks

Looks like very wide angle lens and presumably hyperfocal focusing.

Hi Gregg,

That effect Simon has in his photos is achieved by using a DSLR Camera with a wide angle lens, more towards the 10mm to 18mm range. The more you go towards the wide angle side, the lens tries to capture more of the outer surrounding areas hence the object your focusing on looks stretched.

Put it this way, you have a typical 18mm - 200mm range camera lens from the likes of sigma or canon. 50mm is the equivalent of the human eye vision so therefore anything below 50mm is considered wide angle as your zooming backwards. 50mm onwards is considered as telephoto as your zooming inwards. 200mm + is known as super telephoto.

Another technique to get that sort of effect but a little more extreme is by using a "fish eye" lens which is of a special type.

Most good quality digicams are capable of this stretched look effect too so you dont always need a DSLR, just depends how pro your looking to go really.

Hope that helps.

that is a great response, thanks. I'll have a look at the features on my cameras and see if i can do anything like it, cheers

That's just using a wide angle lens, you won't be able to do that with your normal digicam lens. Looks like it's a very fast lens and like someone else said above it's somewhere around 14mm focal lenght. The sky is a little washed out though but they are some nice photos. I don't usually like extremely wide angle shots of cars as some people go crazy with fish eye lens and ruin it.

Also looks like some HDR editing in that first photo also!
